Yes I do agree with the choices Canada has made because these people have made very big differences in our lives and are amazing Canadian citizens. I think it should remain in this order and I think we can all become very inspired by these people. They are the kind of people for fight for what they believe in ill, or not. They stand up for who they are and they try their best to make a difference. I think if everyone knows what these people have accomplished and think they don’t deserve to be on this list, they should re-think it because some of these people made large impacts on the lives of many. Without them, some of us wouldn’t be who we are today and some of us wouldn’t have the morals we have.
2. If you had to re-order the list, how would you do it? Explain why your #1 choice should have been the Greatest Canadian.
If I had a choice to re-order the list I would re-order it as this:
• 10. Sir Frederick Banting
• 9. Alexander Graham Bell
• 8. Sir John A. Macdonald
• 7. Don Cherry
• 6. Lester B. Pearson
• 5. Tommy Douglas
• 4. Wayne Gretzky
• 3. Pierre Elliott Trudeau
• 2. David Suzuki
• 1. Terry Fox
I think I would re-order it this way because the people I know most about will obviously make a bigger impact on my life and I will chose to be first.
There are many Canadians and individuals all over the world who have demonstrated the importance of being a good citizen. You are to do the following:

Terry Fox.
Terry Fox trained for 14 months with an artificial leg because of a previous operation and he convinced the Canadian Cancer Society to help sponsor his Run across Canada to raise funds and awareness for cancer research.
He made us believe that we can do anything we set our minds too even if we are ill or it may seem as we’re unable to. We can make a difference in our world but we just have to try and we shouldn’t wait for others to start, we have to be independent and make decisions on our own.

Yes, I do agree with the list Canada has chosen. I think this becuase everybody on that list has made a contribution to our way of living. The list contains people who have made changes in things from the enviorment to telephones, to sports. We should honour every single person on that list because they helped make Canada what it is today.
2. If you had to re-order the list, how would you do it? Explain why your #1 choice should have been the Greatest Canadian.
If I was told to re-arrange this list I would put it as:
10. Sir Fredrick Banting
9. Tommy Douglas
8. Lester B Pearson
7. Alexander Graham Bell
6. Pierre Elliott Truedeau
5. Don Cherry
4. Sir John A Macdonald
3. Wayne Gretzky
2. Terry Fox
1. David Suzuki
I chose to put David Suzuki first becuase I think he is trying to protect the most important thing that we, as humans can not live without. Our planet.

I choose as an important Canadian figure, Dr David Suzuki. He has been given constant high acclaim for his 30 years of award-winning work in broadcasting. He was a Proffessor at the University of British Columbia startign in 1969 to his retirement in 2001. Dr Suzuki was born in Vancouver BC in 1936. When he was six he, and his family, were interned in a camp during WW1. After the war ended he went to highschool in London, Ontario. He later went on to earn his PhD in Zoology at the University of Chicago. He has published 43 books and is recognized as a world leader in substainable ecology. He has taught us not to take anything for granted or we will lose it. This is why Dr David Suzuki is a great Canadian citizen.
Part A
1. After reading the greatest Canadian list, I don’t agree with the choices that Canadians made. The list was viewer’s choice, and therefore just a popularity contest, clearly not realistic or inclusive. Although some of the people on this list are truly great Canadians, the majority of these people should not be on this list. Tommy Douglas is a perfect example of a great Canadian, and someone who should be on this list. He created social welfare, universal medical care, old age pensions and many more. Without Tommy Douglas, we Canadians wouldn’t be where we are today. Unfortunately, it’s a joke when he’s being compared to someone like Don Cherry, an illiterate, retired hockey coach, known for his crude insults and his hate for Americans. Furthermore how is Frederick Banting, someone who invented insulin on the list, when Sir William Osler, known as the “Father of modern medicine” didn’t even make the top 100? Overall, I don’t agree with the list, because a great Canadian is someone who’s had an impact on our country, and has shaped and made a contribution to this country in a way that still affects us today, and the majority of the people on this list don’t fall under that category.
2. I would re-order the list as follows:
1. Tommy Douglas
2. Terry Fox
3. David Suzuki
4. Sir William Osler
5. Sir John A. Macdonald
6. Pierre Elliot Trudeau
7. Lester B. Pearson
8. Roberta Bondar
9. Wayne Gretzky
10. Alexander Graham Bell
If I could re-order the list, I would completely alter the people and their order. In 10th would be Alexander Graham Bell inventor of the telephone, in 9th Wayne Gretzky, one of the greatest hockey players of all time. In 8th, Roberta Bondar, an inspirational female speaker with expertise as an astronaut, physician, scientific researcher, and author. In 7th, 6th, and 5th, Lester B. Pearson, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, and Sir John A. Macdonald, Prime ministers with a big impact on Canada. In 4th, Sir William Osler, known as the father of modern medicine. In 3rd, environmentalist David Suzuki, and in 2nd Terry Fox, an inspiration to all as he ran across Canada on one leg, reminding us that it is possible to reach our dreams. And in 1st would remain Tommy Douglas, for if it wasn’t for him, we Canadians wouldn’t be where we are today. He introduced Canada to social welfare, universal medical care, old age pensions, paved roads, car insurance, passed over 100 bills, and reduced provincial debt by $20 million. Even when his party only won nineteen seats in the House of Commons, Tommy still pushed for his policy. His ideas were eventually taken on by more established political parties, and continue to exist today.
Part B
In my opinion, the Canadian Armed Forces are a group of people that demonstrate what citizenship is all about because they represent our country. They protect Canadian independence, ensure safety and security for Canadians, protect Canadian values, help during domestic crisis, as well as contribute to peace and security. They put our country’s moral believes into action by promoting and protecting Canadian values and interests. Furthermore, the Canadian Armed Forces not only help Canada, but they help the entire world around them. They don’t take a violent approach to their actions; instead they act as the world’s greatest peacekeepers. Most recently, the Canadian Armed Forces have been in Afghanistan to improve security situations and have assisted in rebuilding their country. While there, they’ve had success in their access to communication, economic development, community development, and wealth. Throughout all their work, they’ve made a big difference in Canada and around the world, and they are reasons why we Canadians can call ourselves free and independent.
The Canadian Armed Forces embody the three aspects of citizenship by being informed about the necessities of our country, understanding our relationships with our government and our neighbouring countries, and using their knowledge to directly promote and protect the government. They are aware of the privacy and protection needs of Canada, and use their powers to fulfill these needs. Secondly, they are purposeful in their relationships with neighbouring countries. The Canadian Armed forces have an alliance with the Americans, and have operated on sea, land and air with the U.S. military. Lastly, they apply their knowledge, and participate in our Country in a way that directly influences our government. They defend Canada and Canadian power, by monitoring Canada’s regions, protecting fisheries, drug interrogation and the environment, disaster relief, and humanitarian assistance.
The Canadian Armed Forces are great role models for Canadian citizenship because they stand up for what they believe in. They are very loyal to their country and do everything they can to prove it, even if it means being shipped to another country. We need to support their efforts because their hard work is for our own well being. They work hard every day, so that Canadian citizens can have a better quality of life. They make others want to be better people because of their constant fight and determination. They show all the aspects of being a true Canadian citizen and inspire people around them to do the same.
PART A
1. I have mixed opinions about this top 10 list. I think that Tommy Douglas should definitely be number one because without him, Canada wouldn't be the same without it. Also, Canada is known for its universal public health care so without it, we wouldn’t be Canada and we wouldn’t be distinguishable from the United States. However, I think this list lacks the representation of women. I think Canadians should not only learn about men that contributed to society but women as well. Also, I don’t think Don Cherry should be on the list whatsoever. He hasn’t really done anything important other than entertaining hockey fans. I think it’s an insult to people like David Suzuki and Lester B. Pearson to be compared to someone like Don Cherry. Other than those 2 points (the lack of representation of woman and Don Cherry) I think this list sums up almost every major person that helped to shape Canada.
2.
10 Wayne Gretsky
9 Margaret Atwood
8 Alexander Graham Bell
7 Sir John A. MacDonald
6 Lester B. Pearson
5 Sir F. Banting
4 Pierre Elliot Trudeau
3Terry Fox
2 David Suzuki
1 Tommy Douglas
Tommy Douglas is number one because his decision to make health care free and public impacts the life of every single Canadian. Without free health care a lot of Canadians wouldn’t be able to afford proper health care. We would be just like the U.S. He earned his spot as the number one Canadian of all time. David Suzuki is number two because he cares for the environment and he dedicated his entire life to making us aware of the harm that we’re doing to the environment. Margaret Atwood is one of the greatest Canadian writers ever. She deserves to be on the list because of all of her accomplishments. Terry Fox accomplished a lot in his short life time. He raised awareness about cancer, which now affects a huge number of people all around the world.
PART B
My choice is David Suzuki.
The 3 Aspects of Citizenship:
1.Informed: David Suzuki is very knowledgeable when it comes to the environment. He knows that we’re doing wrong and he provides us with ideas on how to fix it.
2.Active: He’s always teaching the population about the environment. He always goes to conferences and he spends his entire day trying to get the message out that we’re killing the earth.
3.Purposeful: He knows what needs to be done in order to fix the problem of global warming. He also thinks things through and comes up with solutions for these problems.
David Suzuki is a great Canadian citizen because he cares greatly about the environment, our future and health. He spent his entire life advocating the importance of environmental solutions to issues such as global warming. Not only does he care about the environment but he also cares about our well being. He’s a big supporter of non-genetically modified food. David Suzuki uses different methods to encourage various age groups to be environmentalists. For example, his very popular show called “The Nature of Things” attracts younger and older people. Mr. Suzuki is a great public speaker and he’s very knowledgeable. He’s a great role model because embodies everything a good Canadian should be. He’s intelligent, charismatic, responsible and most importantly he educates the population.

1. To answer this question, i agree and disagree with this list. Some people that are higher up havn't completed as much achievments than the ones that are below. Though they are all very amazing canadians and have accomplished some outstanding goals, that affect us and the citizens of canada, i think one or two people shouldn't be where they are. They represent our country, and were proud to back them up, from their history time line. The list is fairly well put, but some of the canadians could of just been moved a little further up onto the list. Though some establishments may have been more outstanding, some canadians have completed more than that one perticular detail. For what some other people think is totally different compared to my opinion. These people do represent a wide range of Canadian citizenship, but some, as for example: don cherry and wayne gretzky, are legendary to hockey and their goals, event, and what not. But some people don't find it as appealing, to interest so much into hockey. I leav that opinion up to other people.
2. If you had to re-order the list, how would you do it? Explain why your #1 choice should have been the Greatest Canadian.
2.If i were to re-order the Greatest Canadian List this would be my choice:
1. Terry Fox

3. Sir John A. MacDonald
4. Tommy Douglas
5. David Suzuki
6. Sir Frederik Banting
7. Lester B. Pearson
8. Alexander Graham Bell
9. Wayne Gretzky
10. Don Cherry
My number one choice is Terry Fox. The reason i choose him to be my number one canadian is, for years we have done events, venues and many activities honoring him and what he has established. He has been fighting with cancer most of his life, and for him to force himself and run for so long, that not even a person that has no disabilty can do. He represents what Canada is really about, and has encouraged many to achieve their goals and prior to the government, has set up a national day for him. Everyone on that day goes for a run and celebrates him. When i have looked at the list, their was probablly only 2 names i knew that appeared, and one of them were Terry Fox. Many people world wide know terry fox and have him as a symbol of their life. He is a true Canadian citizen and i am proud as a canadian myself to have him upon our Greatest Canadian List. He never would of thought that he would of been in the greatest canadian list, but like his famous quote "...I believe in miracles." source:http://www.cbc.ca/greatest/top_ten/nominee/fox-terry.html
Part B
Forget the list for a minute…
There are many Canadians and individuals all over the world who have demonstrated the importance of being a good citizen. You are to do the following:
1.-choose an individual or a group that you feel demonstrates what citizenship is all about;
-research and compare significant contributions made by the individual or group to their communities and assess the impact of these individuals’ or groups’ contributions;
-what did this individual or group do to make a difference and why does it matter?
-describe how the individual or group embodies the three aspects of citizenship;
-in your opinion, why is this individual or group a great role model for citizenship? (respond in a paragraph 6-8 sentences)
1. The person that i feel demonstrates what Canadian Citizenship is all about is Tim Horton group of seven. Tim horton is a very popular name as today it is a donut and coffee store. It was naemd after him, and Canada is respresented by Tim hortons, which is represented by the himself. His accomplishments vary in the hockey business. He has encouraged many players to get out there and try their hardest. He had invented the slap shot. And from then hockey players had tooken that move amd represented it towards hockey. Canada has a great history with hockey, and as our stereotypes, that's all some people think Canada of. But what they don't know is the people behind the hockey and tim Hortons. He had died before he could of seen the progress towards his business. He had made a difference to us, and showed us that we must do great things in life, to achieve places, to live out the fullest of these great things you have done. As the three aspects of Canadian Citizenship embodies Tim horton because he is a person of rules, and respects the country he lives in. In that he is a great role model to everyone. Not only guys who play hockey, but fro other sports, other topics, other ways in live, so we can achieve the things we want, to be our true selves, to respect the culture and citizen we live in. Tim Hortons shows our true logo, out of our many, and only represents the good side of our Canadian Citizen.

PART A:
1. After previously reading the “Greatest Canadian” list, I have reached a verdict contradicting the choices that Canadians have made. The information assembled throughout the survey is biased, since not the entire nation participated, and it was based on preference, not contribution to Canadian history. Also, based on the given information, it is evident that the survey is not a current representation of the population’s preference. It was taken in 2004, dating nearly four years ago. In my opinion, a Canadian hero deserves recognition based on the amount they have contributed and the amount it has impacted Canada in present day, not just the most popular individual. I believe that many truly deserve this honour. However, not all of these Canadians are comparable to one another. After researching these heroes’ involvement in Canadian history, I have come to realize that Tommy Douglas has earned the respect to be known as a Canadian hero, while Don Cherry has done nothing but bash Canada’s reputation as a valued country. Tommy Douglas and Don Cherry may be considered as a character foil: Douglas has made an impact on not only Canada, but internationally, including medical care, law and order, and economically advanced this nation. Meanwhile, Cherry has continuously been a controversial figure in Canadian history, doing absolutely nothing significant to evolve Canada or the world. To conclude, I disagree with the choices Canada has made because it has not prepared an accurate analysis of those who have truly made a difference in Canada.
2. I would re-order the list accordingly:
10. Don Cherry
9. Wayne Gretzky
8. Sir John A. Macdonald
7. David Suzuki
6. Alexander Graham Bell
5. Pierre Elliot Trudeau
4. Terry Fox
3. Sir Frederick Banting
2. Lester B. Pearson
1. Tommy Douglas
If I had to re-order the list, I would significantly modify the heroes and their orders. In order to re-order this list, I imagined my life without each of these individuals and my current life. Then, I calculated how much each person has developed the present and the future. The last two on the list should be Cherry and Gretzky, since they have only shaped Canada’s entertainment in positive and negative ways. Macdonald should be eight on the list for developing Canada as a Dominion. Then, Suzuki should be seventh since he advanced science and the environment, while Bell should be sixth since he advances since and invented the telephone. In fifth should be Trudeau, since he established rights and freedoms. In fourth, third and second, should be Fox, Banting, and Pearson, because they have all focused on health and keeping the peace. In my opinion, I believe that the original #1 choice, Tommy Douglas, deserved to be the ‘Greatest Canadian’ because he is the only one on this list that has made an international contribution for many various things, while putting emphasis on health. Without health as our top priority, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the additional aspects of life such as entertainment, politics, money, or rights and freedoms. Tommy Douglas not only helped Canada, but he did it in a way that was extraordinary. After getting his leg amputated, he became Canada’s founding father of medical care. Then, after witnessing the bloody end of the Winnipeg General Strike, he was able to pass over 100 bills, and establish paved roads and sewage systems. Also, he was able to reduce provincial debt by $20 million. To conclude, Tommy Douglas is a brilliant Canadian hero who deserves to maintain the #1 position as the ‘Greatest Canadian’ because he managed to cover health, politics, social welfare, and economics, while maintaining their importance years later.
PART B:
In my opinion, Craig Keilburger is an individual who has demonstrated what citizenship is all about. In current times, Craig has proven himself a key symbol of hope and equality amongst all children in the world. Although some may criticize Craig as leaving the nation in the hands of the youth, Craig is an individual who has positively made a difference in the world. Craig has proven himself a true hero amongst not only children, but all society, internationally. Along with the many approaches to saving children from child labour and child slavery, Craig established ‘Free the Children’ in 1996 at only the age of twelve. ‘Free the Children’ is a global organization, which has children helping children in other parts of the world. Beginning with funds from garage sales and car washes, this association has evolved into a nation-wide way of eliminating harsh living conditions for youth. His contributions impacted many across the world, especially in third world countries where children are treated unjustly with violated rights and freedoms. This impact matters even today, because his legacy managed to withstand the test of time, and help the most innocent imprisoned. Craig Keilburger demonstrates the perfect example of what citizenship is all about because he is one person, who affected and positively changed the lives of others, globally.
Craig Keilburger embodies the three aspects of citizenship. Firstly, Craig is an informed citizen because he is aware of current events. For instance, he read a newspaper article about a boy named Iqbal Masik, who had been enslaved in a carpet factory, and was later killed at the age of twelve for trying to spread the word about child slavery. This encouraged and prompted Craig to establish his organization, so that other children don’t have to suffer the same cruelty and imprisonment as Iqbal did. Then, Craig was purposeful because he related the newspaper article to his own life. He knew the difference between right and wrong, and he realized that not everyone in countries such as Pakistan is entitled to and has the privilege of enjoying life like we do, in first world countries. Lastly, Craig is an active citizen because he turns dreams into reality. Not only was he informed and purposeful, but Craig was determined to make a difference. It is evident that he has done so, by witnessing the struggles first-hand by visiting sweat shops, factories, and slumps in South Asia, to save enslaved children. Not only did he do this, but Craig also created ‘Free the Children’ so that others can participate and have positive involvement in the process. Craig embodies the three aspects of citizenship because he is aware of the need of his global community, he is purposeful by forming an opinion about the actions, and by acting upon the actions in a positive way.
In my opinion, this individual is a great role model for citizenship because he embodies the three areas of citizenship. Craig is aware, purposeful, and active. He is aware of the ongoing issue regarding child slavery, and he is able to compare his life to the lives of others less fortunate. Also, he is purposeful because he is willing to understand the situation from others’ point of view, and form an opinion. Then, he is active by sacrificing and helping others live a better tomorrow. Craig stands up for human rights and freedoms, internationally. Overall, everything Craig does influences others to follow in his footsteps, therefore he is a great role model, positively affecting the world around him.

Part A:
1) In my opinion, I do not agree with the choices Canada has made on the Top 10 Greatest Canadians list. After looking through the Top 100 list, I saw that there were some Canadians that I think deserved to be on the Top 10 list. It's very difficult to say who the real Greatest Canadian is, because the results were from opinions of us Canadian citizens. Each person I saw that was on the Top 100 did or does something great for Canada, which many people look up to. What confuses me is why Don Cherry, a hockey commentator, for example, bet someone who dedicated most of his life to help the poor and rejected(Jean Vanier). Although Don Cherry may be a role model for those who voted for him, this contest should've been fact-only and not who they prefer. Looking at facts and what they did, a person like Jean Vanier should've been on the Top 10 instead. Each Canadian on the Top 100 list did something great for Canada, and even though they are all different, they still should be looked upon. I do think that some things were more important than others, but that is only my opinion. In addition, I don't agree that there should even be a Top 10 list. There is no reason to rate their actions to see who's was the best, because they were all very important to this country. Ultimately, every person on the Top 100 has done an important role in Canada, and I think that is what truly matters.
2. If I had to re-order the Top 10 list, my choice would be:
10-Don Cherry
09-Alexander Graham Bell
08-Wayne Gretzky
07-Lester B. Pearson
06-Sir Frederick Banting
05-Tommy Douglas
04-Sir John A. Macdonald
03-Terry Fox
02-Pierre Elliott Trudeau
01-David Suzuki
After reading this question and re-ordering the list it became even clearer to me why there is no need for the Top 10 list. I chose David Suzuki as my #1 choice, because besides the economy and gov't of Canada etc, our environment is most important to me, and that's what David Suzuki's main goal is. If I looked at others lists, I am sure that some would have Lester B. Pearson for politics first, or another Canadian figure. I care about the environment as a top priority, while others think of politics or medication as theirs. All of Canada who voted has their own priorities; that is why it is impossible to find a true #1. This vote was basically all opinionated. Environment, politics, medication etc are ALL important, so how can there ever be a #1 without any opinions?
Part B:
In my opinion, I think Pierre Elliott Trudeau demonstrated what citizenship is all about. He was the Prime Minister of Canada from 1968- 1979, and 1980-1984. Not only do I think he was a great leader, but he had a great personality and view on things as well. One of the great things that he did which represents Canada today, was that he introduced the Official Languages Bill in October of 1968. This was a bill that said that Canada should officially be bilingual, and that all Federal Services be offered in both French and English. Today, one of the things that Canada is known for is that it is cultural and bilingual. Having French made into an official language by Mr. Trudeau shows me that he wanted Canada to be a great country. In addition, another thing that shows me he had good citizenship for Canada, was when during the October Crisis, he answered a question of how far he would go to stop terrorists with the response of "Just watch me." This shows me that he was faithful to his country that he represented at the time, and would do what he could for it. In these ways, Pierre Trudeau demonstrated citizenship in an good manner, and maintained a great personality toward Canadian Citizens.

1. Do you agree with the choices that Canada made? To properly answer this question, you may have to “Google” the names to find out a bit more about some of these people. Thoroughly explain whether or not you agree with the choices Canadians made. Respond in a paragraph (min. 6-8 sentences).
In my opinion, I do you agree with the choices that Canada has made. I think this because these Canadians have made an influence in our life’s to try harder and to never give up on something we think we can’t do. I also think these people are amazing Canadians because they have made a difference in so many other peoples life’s. If it wasn’t for these great Canadians many of us would give up on doing so many things. But, we look back and see how these people stood up and accomplished what they did, and we think to our selves if they can do we can too. So, to me these people deserve to be on the top 10 greatest Canadians list.
2. If you had to re-order the list, how would you do it? Explain why your #1 choice should have been the Greatest Canadian.
If i had to re-order the list, i would choose to do it like this:
10. Wayne Gretzky
9. Sir Frederick Banting
8. Don Cherry
7. Lester B. Pearson
6. Sir John A. MacDonald
5. Pierre Elliott Trudeau
4. David Suzuki
3. Tommy Douglas
2. Alexamder Graham Bell
1. Terry Fox
I think this is the way I would re-order them. What I did to do this was, I went on Google and I searched all of them. I listed them this way because I thought who did the thing I was most influenced by. I choose Terry Fox for my number one because what he did was probably so hard for him and he has influenced not only my life but so many other people that had/have cancer.
Part B:
Forget the list for a minute…
There are many Canadians and individuals all over the world who have demonstrated the importance of being a good citizen. You are to do the following:
-choose an individual or a group that you feel demonstrates what citizenship is all about;
-research and compare significant contributions made by the individual or group to their communities and assess the impact of these individuals’ or groups’ contributions;
-what did this individual or group do to make a difference and why does it matter?
-describe how the individual or group embodies the three aspects of citizenship;
-in your opinion, why is this individual or group a great role model for citizenship? (Respond in a paragraph 6-8 sentences)
This individual makes a great role model for citinzenship because hes a peacemaker who wants peace all around the world, and he tried his best to stop the hutus from killing the tutsis but there wasnt much he can do to stop it, but he tried his best and is known for all his hard work. Recently Romeo Dallaire has been working on problem of war-affected children, and has visited countries where children are used as soldiers or are being sold into sexual slavery.

Yes i definitely agree with the list Canada has chosen. Each individual has made an impact on the way of living. Whether it be something so simple now a day's such as a telephone. Canadian's haven’t realized that other citizens have made many changes to the lifestyle one lives now. The list chosen is a great example of hero's, inventors and athletes. They should be honoured simply because they have contributed in making Canada what it is today.

5. Alexander Graham Bell
4. Pierre Elliot Trudeau
3. Lester B. Pearson
2. Terry Fox
1. Sir Frederick Trudeau
If i had to re-order the list I would put it in an order that has an affect on myself. For example how life would be without each of these individuals. I fist looked at the accomplishments these citizens have made. I found that the last two Greatest Canadians haven't made much of an impact on Canada let alone on myself. Don Cherry and Wayne Gretzky have been excellent Canadian entertainers but haven’t made significant changes as other citizens. Sir Frederick Banting, Terry Fox and Lester B. Pearson are all on the top three Greatest Canadians because they have made a change in the medics and keeping peace. Banting discovered insulin, Terry Fox raised money for cancer and Pearson kept peace. I believe these three men are hero's in today's society, Sir Frederick being the #1 Greatest Canadian in my opinion. Without this man many people would have passed away due to the disease call Diabetes.

Terry Fox embodies the three aspects of citizenship:
Informed: Terry Fox is very wise, although he was only 18 when starting the “Marathon of Hope” he provided Canada with what he could give. With this he raised money for cancer research.
Active: Terry Fox taught the community that anyone can do something if they put their mind to it. He demonstrated his words with the Marathon of hope. To this day in honour of Mr. Fox once a year citizenS Run for cancer research. He made others realize the importance of his whole journey and a tradition was made in name of him.
Purposeful: Mr. Fox knew that in order to help others in need he had to do something on hiS own. He came up with his marathon and did what was right.
Terry Fox is a hero, one of Canada’s “Greatest Canadians” as well as a man who demonstrates what citizenship is all about. For 14 months Mr. Fox trained to run what he called the “Marathon of Hope.” Terry didn’t get much attention at the begging of his journey, but it soon became popular and he kept running. Terry ran to prove people anything could be done, and most importantly to raise money for those with cancer. Terry Fox is a great role model for citizenship.

1. After reading the top 10 Canadians, I do agree with the list because these people have contributed to Canada like no other. They have made huge differences in Canada and our lives. From the pension law, to discovering insulin, to the greatest hockey scorer, and to caring for the environment. Without these people Canada wouldn’t have been what it is today. They stood up for what they believed in and never gave up, that's what makes Canada's history so great. I also disagree with this list, Don Cherry should not have been on this list he has done nothing important that represents Canada well. He was a successful coach, but he also was a high school dropout who only bashes the Americans and his rude insults. I don't think he has done anything significant for Canada and our history.
2. If you had to re-order the list, how would you do it? Explain why your #1 choice should have been the Greatest Canadian.

7. Sir Frederick Banting
6. Lester B. Banting
5. Sir John A. Macdonald
4. Pierre Elliot Trudeau
3. Terry Fox
2. David Suzuki
1. Tommy Douglas
The reason why i chose Tommy Douglas to remain at the number 1 position is because he truly deserves it. Without him we wouldn't have free health care which is a huge benefit to Canadians. If we didn't have free health care than a lot of Canadians would not be able to afford the medicine and would possibly die without the right treatment due to the expensive costs. Since Tommy made health care free its easier for Canadians and it's more beneficial. He has made a huge impact and has inspired people around Canada.

A Canadian who has demonstrated the importance of being a good citizen is Terry Fox. He was known as The cancer victim who ran over 3000 miles across Canada, he started his journey when he discovered he had bone cancer and had his leg amputated. He made the decision to run across Canada so that he could raise money for cancer research. He wanted to raise awareness for this disease right after he had his right leg removed. With an artificial leg Terry still ran across Canada-starting in St. John's Newfoundland and ended in Thunder bay Ontario. He had to stop because the cancer spread to his lungs and he died a year later. I think Terry Fox made a huge difference in people's lives and inspired them. He was truly a hero and one the remains close to Canadians. He Taught us that we can do anything we want to and set ourselves out to do. To always believe in us and to know that you can do whatever it is that you want.

No I completely disagree on the choices Canadians have made. This list has some very important people but it also has some not so important people such as 7. Don Cherry & 10. Wayne Gretzky. These two individuals aren’t great Canadians. Sure they can win hockey games and get Canadian hockey fans motivated for their team, but I am sure there are way more important Canadians on this planet. What about a Canadian who can make you laugh such as Jim Carrey or Mike Myers? What about a Canadian who is a talented singer such as Shania Twain or Avril Lavigne? How about a well-known hero Craig Kielburger? These are all well deserving Canadians.
2. If you had to re-order the list, how would you do it? Explain why your #1 choice should have been the Greatest Canadian.

· 5. David Suzuki
· 4. Pierre Elliott Trudeau
· 3. Tommy Douglas
· 2. Terry Fox
· 1. Sir John A. Macdonald
Sir John A. Macdonald should have been the greatest Canadian. He is the founding father of Canada. Without Sir John A. Macdonald this list wouldn’t even exist because there wouldn’t be a Canada.

In my opinion, there has been a great attempt to stop poverty in the Africa, that group of people are called G8. This group of people started Live 8. I would wide concert witch would help raise money for Africa. On Saturday July 2 2005,10 concerts took place in 10 major cities. This concert has raised well over 16 million dollars for Africa. The whole point of these concerts was to make Africa, the continent with the most amount of poverty, more developed. Their slogan was to “make poverty history”. This great action was truly a great act of citizenship.

yes, I do agree with the choices Canada has selected for the top 10Greatest Canadians because, these Canadians have made a huge impact to many citizens. Also, they have touched them with the many differences they have made. For example, Terry Fox was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma. In addition to the example, he still tried to achieve by walking across Canada. Unfortunatly, while he was running to raise money, he passed away leaving a special name for Canada. Overall, I personally don't think they should be ordered from 1-10 because, they all accomplished something that made a difference to Canadians. Therefore, no one is "better" then anyone.
2. If you had to re-order the list, how would you do it? Explain why your #1 choice should have been the Greatest Canadian.
If I were to re-order the Greatest Canadian list I would put it as:

• 6. David Suzuki
• 5. Alexander Graham Bell
• 4. Sir John A. Macdonald
• 3. Tommy Douglas

I chose Terry Fox as my #1 Greatest Canadian because he has set many goals and has achieved most of them.

I chose Terry Fox to be my first Greatest Canadian because he set and achieved many goals throughout his marathon. He would call his journey the "Marathon of Hope". Terry Fox has been fighting with cancer for most of his life. For him to make effort and run for so long, he has made a difference to those who have cancer and those who do not. Terry Fox represented Canada in a very nice and friendly country. He didn't think he was "good enough" to make Canada’s top 10 Greatest Canadian but, he successfully did.
Part A: Yes i do agree with the list canada has chosen. I say this because these people have made chanegs in our world, and have done their best to make a difference. These people have inspired many lives and show what it means to be a true Canadian Citizen.these people have played a huge role and have achived many goals, and made Canada a better place.
Part B: Terry Fox
Wayne Gretzky
Sir. John A. Macdonald
Lester B. Pearson
Pierre Elliott Trudeau
Alexander Graham Bell
Sir Frederick Banting
Tommy Douglas
David Suzuki
Don Cherry
I would re-order it this way because the people who are first on my list are people i know more about and i feel have inspired me more than the others.
Citizens Who Have Made a Difference
Part A
1. Yes, I do agree with the choices that Canada made in regards to the Top Ten Greatest Canadian List. Each person that is represented on this list has contributed to our country either through the medical field, politically, environmentally, or thru science and entertainment. Thru the medical field, Sir Frederick Banting invented insulin for diabetics. Terry Fox helped the funding and awareness for cancer research. Politically, Tommy Douglas former NDP Leader and Premier of Saskatchewan introduced universal public healthcare to the country. Sir John A. MacDonald, Lester B. Pearson, and Pierre Elliott Trudeau are all former Prime Ministers of Canada, who left a large impact on our country and its government, example, Confederation, Unity, Medicare, Pension Plans, Multiculturalism, etc. Environmentally, David Suzuki has educated and made us aware of our environment and how important it is to take care of it. Thru entertainment we have our sports hero Wayne Gretzky, top scorer in the NHL and our very much opinionated Don Cherry; both have in common the love of hockey. Then we have the invention of the telephone, thanks to Alexander Graham Bell, without the phone we wouldn’t be able to communicate.
2. If I had to re-order the list, I would choose to do it like this:
1. Sir Frederick Banting
2. Terry Fox
3. Tommy Douglas
4. Pierre Elliott Trudeau
5. Lester B. Pearson
6. Sir John A. MacDonald
7. David Suzuki
8. Alexander Graham Bell
9. Wayne Gretzky
10. Don Cherry
For me each person on this list are very important Canadians who have influenced my life in one way or the other. But the top three greatest Canadians for me are: Sir Frederick Banting, Terry Fox and Tommy Douglas. I chose, Sir Frederick Banting first because he has made the greatest impact on my life. He invented insulin, if it wasn't for him and his colleagues, the family and friends, which I know have Type 1 and 2 Diabetes would not be alive today. The insulin that they take everyday helps them stay alive and live a normal and healthy life. Terry Fox for me was a hero. I picked him second because he was an amazing person who gave himself to others. He made our country aware of cancer and how important research funding is. My third choice is Tommy Douglas who is “Canada’s Father of Medicare”, without his help we would not have universal public healthcare.
Part B
My choice is Sir Frederick Banting. The three aspects of citizenship are:
1. Informed: Discovered insulin (October 31, 1920) and perfected it with his three colleagues, John J.R. MacLeod, Charles Best and James B. Collip (May 1921–December 1921).
2. Active: Worked as a part-time instructor at the University of Western Ontario. Thru his lectures and medical journals he discovered a life saving serum that would help diabetics. Experimented first on diabetic dogs. Then with help from his colleagues, purified the insulin extraction to be used on humans. First human to use insulin was a 14 year old teenager, named Leonard Thompson (January 23,1922), his health improved right away.
3. Purposeful: Sir Frederick Banting wanted to make sure; the insulin is available to all who needed it. Saved many lives of people who have diabetes in the world. Did not want anyone to exploit insulin. Wanted all the proceeds from sales of insulin to go right back into medical research for new and better treatments for diabetes.
Sir Frederick Banting with his colleagues made an important impact to our country and the world. The discovery of insulin has helped millions of people who suffer with diabetes to live a normal healthy life. In my opinion, Sir Frederick Banting is “The Greatest Canadian” ever. He is the perfect role model for citizenship. He was a War Hero, Knighted by the British Crown and the first Canadian with the Nobel Prize in Physiology. Dr. Banting did not seek fame or fortune with his discovery of insulin. All he wanted was to make sure that the insulin would be easily manufactured and available to anyone who suffered from diabetes. Because of Dr. Banting’s discovery of insulin, people with diabetes live longer and healthier lives. Of what I have read about Sir Frederick Banting, he was an extraordinary man, a doctor, an educator, loyal, humble and always put others before himself, these are the qualities that a perfect role model for citizenship has.

Part C: The individual i feel shows great citizenship is Wayne Gretzky. Wayne "The Great one" was born January 26 1961 in branford,Ontario Canada. He began his hockey leauge in 1979-80 season. Wayne Gretzky has inspired many and has won many trophies and showed his talent to all of Canada and made Canada known for its wonderous games of hockey. Wayne Gretzky has shown true leadership and has shown people what it means to be a proud canadian and shows true spotsmenship.

Part A;
One:
In my opinion, the list of ‘Greatest Canadians’ is not at all accurate. This is true because the list was based solely upon people’s opinions from the past, meaning several great accomplishments have been taken into consideration. Firstly, if anyone has to ‘Google’ some of these names, it only proves how little some people know about who a great Canadian really is. Or maybe the listed person has not accomplished enough to be there in the first place. For example, I find it interesting how a hockey coach such as Don Cherry, can be placed above the first prime minister of our nation. This leads to another dispute; how a person’s judgement can vary. It is obvious by glancing at the list that some names may only be ordered because of their fame to the public. It is almost a shame to the people who voted the way they did about our famous citizens. I found it quite frustrating to see that many Canadians do not take consideration to the real heroes of our country. Finally, it should be noted that the survey was conducted in 2004. This means that opinions will surely have changed, and many new accomplishments have been achieved since then. For all those stated reasons, it is very clear to me, that the list of “Greatest Canadians” is evidently not truthful, and absolutely not something for Canadians to be proud of.
Two:
• 10. Don Cherry
• 9. Wayne Gretzky
• 8. Alexander Graham Bell
• 7. Lester B. Pearson
• 6. Pierre Elliott Trudeau
• 5. Tommy Douglas
• 4. Sir Frederick Banting
• 3. David Suzuki
• 2. Terry Fox
• 1. Sir John A. Macdonald
I chose Sir John A. Macdonald as the Greatest Canadian. I did this because I believe he is someone, which no one can argue about his achievements. He is the man that any Canadian citizen should admire. For one, he was our first prime minister and brought many of Canada’s current provinces into Confederation. Second, he is responsible for the transcontinental railway we are still proud of today. Clearly, since he has done so much for us so long ago, it is not a surprise why he is still constantly known to us today. He is someone who any person can look up to as a role model. Macdonald had strived for so much for his country, and I, for one will always be thankful for. Unlike other names on the list (Don Cherry), it is clear that no one can debate why he is placed in the top ten. In conclusion, Sir John A. Macdonald started our nation to be what it is today, and with no question would he be other than number one on my list of Greatest Canadians.
Part B;
My Choice: Diane Dupuy
I believe that Diana Dupuy is a woman who demonstrates what Canadian citizenship is all about. She is an entertainer, author, and motivational speaker who lives in the area of Toronto Ontario. She is also the founder of Famous People Players, a theatre where people put on live performances to an audience. The amazing part about this experience is that all the performers are developmentally challenged. I, myself have gone to see her shows more than once, and love every moment that I am there. She speaks with such great confidence, with a warm voice, and a high outlook on life. This woman is an exceptional role model to others because of her dedication to others, regardless of their circumstances. Second, she should be acknowledged for the several donations and contributions that she gives back to the city. I believe that she is a great display of a true citizen, because of how she encourages everyone to feel welcome and safe where they are in their lives. She is always sure to donate and is determined to live her life to the fullest, and always dreams of a brighter future. Her story is phenomenal and inspires me to always strive for the best, and to help others around me in need. Finally, because I know that she is someone I greatly admire and endeavour to become in the future, Diane Dupuy is my choice for what citizenship is all about.

1. Do you agree with the choices that Canada made? To properly answer this question, you may have to “Google” the names to find out a bit more about some of these people. Thoroughly explain whether or not you agree with the choices Canadians made. Respond in a paragraph (min. 6-8 sentences).
Yes, I do agree with the choices that Canada has made because all the people on the list have made big differences in our lives and are wonderful Canadian citizens. I think this because every Canadian on the top 10 list has made a difference in our everyday lives. The list has people who have made changes in people's lives, sports, our environment and lot's more. These people are the kind of people who will fight for what they believe in or for there rights. They stand up for who they are and they also try their best to make a difference. Everyone should respect everyone on that list because if it wasn't for them we wouldn't have so many wonderful changes in our country.
2. If you had to re-order the list, how would you do it? Explain why your #1 choice should have been the Greatest Canadian.
If I had a choice to re-order the list I would re-order it as this: I would on switch Tommy Douglas and Terry Fox, so Tommy Douglas would be 2nd and Terry Fox would be 1st.
• 10. Wayne Gretzky
• 9. Alexander Graham Bell
• 8. Sir John A. MacDonald
• 7. Don Cherry
• 6. Lester B. Pearson
• 5. David Suzuki
• 4. Sir Frederick Banting
• 3. Pierre Elliott Trudeau
• 2. Tommy Douglas
• 1. Terry Fox
I would switch them two because I think Terry Fox made a bigger difference than Tommy Douglas
Part B
Forget the list for a minute…
There are many Canadians and individuals all over the world who have demonstrated the importance of being a good citizen. You are to do the following:
-choose an individual or a group that you feel demonstrates what citizenship is all about;
-research and compare significant contributions made by the individual or group to their communities and assess the impact of these individuals’ or groups’ contributions;
-what did this individual or group do to make a difference and why does it matter?
-describe how the individual or group embodies the three aspects of citizenship;
-in your opinion, why is this individual or group a great role model for citizenship? (respond in a paragraph 6-8 sentences)
Terry Fox.
I chose Terry Fox because he made a very big difference in our country. He trained for 14 months with an artificial leg because of a previous operation and he asked the Canadian Cancer Society to help him out to sponsor his Run across Canada to raise funds and awareness for cancer research.
He made us believe that we can do anything we set our minds too even if we are ill or it may seem as we can not do it for some reason. Anyone can make a difference in our world today but all we have to do is put or minds to it and just try it. Also we have to be independent and not making someone else make your decisions.
Part A:
1) No, I do not completely agree with the choices Canadians have made. I believe Tim Horton’s was made a much bigger impact in the Canadian identity than Bell. In fact, why is Bell even on this list? I wonder why David Suzuki is so highly regarded enough to be seen as one of the GREATEST citizens, when to me he just did his job. However, this was a nationwide vote, where many more people than just a grade 10 student who doesn’t know much about Canada have cast their votes, and if these are the people that citizens have chosen to be the GREATEST citizens, then maybe they are. Everyone on this list has helped shape Canada and our society in a positive way, or helped build our Canadian pride and/or identity. The fact that their names are even known to an everyday citizen says something about them, and what they’ve down. Considering this was a nationwide vote, even if I may not agree with the people, all these people must be exceptionally famous or a role model to us for all these citizens to have voted for them.
2) 10. Alexander Graham Bell
9. David Suzuki
8. Don Cherry
7. Terry Fox
6. Frederick Banting
5. Tommy Douglas
4. Lester B. Pearson
3. Pierre Trudeau
2. Wayne Gretzky
1. John A. Macdonald
The reason I chose John A Macdonald was out of respect. He was the founder of our country, our FIRST Prime Minister, and although he may have lived many years ago when society was completely different, our government system was not perfect and we didn’t have our charter of rights, and I’ve heard he may have been racist, he still played a large part in forming Canada, and I think we should acknowledge him and that he has been partially credited with the formation of Canada.
Part B:
1-3) The group I’ve chosen is MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driving. MADD is a group of people who’s main goal is to stop drunk driving, and the accidents that come with it. They are working hard to create stricter punishments and laws to prevent drunk driving. Public awareness is also important to MADD. They go around schools and inform thousands of students about the pain and struggles drunk driving gives not only the driver but also to the victim, families and friends. They also offer programs and help for victims of alcohol related car accidents. Although they haven’t really affected society in a really big way, I believe that with persistence, they might even change the law and punishment!
4) MADD is a shining example of citizens at work. They are knowledgeable and informed. They know and understand the law, the punishments, and first hand accounts of the court at work. They’ve seen how the decisions are made first hand and how the court continually gives such easy punishments on drunk drivers. However, they are not completely satisfied with it. They know what they want, but it isn’t being done. So they do what all informed citizens with a purpose do, and take action, lawfully of course. Their rights may not be infringed, but they still want a change in the government. They are taking action, step by step to make sure drunk driving is prevented, even if they’re just small steps like informing students about the dangers of drunk driving. With persistence and genuine passion, they could bring a change in the way drunk driving is handled.
5) MADD is a good role model to all of us. They are just normal citizens, like you and me, who without doing drastic things like running across Canada and inventing the pension plan, are making positive changes in Canada. For those who want to help change Canada without having to devote your life to it, just look at MADD for an example. They are informed, purposeful and very active. They have an actual genuine passion and care for everyone’s safety and want to prevent anyone from being hurt. They do what they think is right, for ALL people. We should look up to them as inspiration as simple people working together for a change we can be proud of.
Part A:
1) I personally agree with the "TOP TEN CANADIAN CITIZENS" elected by fellow canadians. The people choosen have made a significant contribution to society in the past and for our future. From Terry fox, fighting for the cure against cancer, to David Suzuki, with wanting to maintain a healthy and safe enviroment for generations to come. These canadians made a difference, one way or another, and became major aspects of canadian history. It is thanks to these citizens and their contributions that we live the type of lifestyle that we do. These people have set goals and made decisions that benefitted others. They were all apart of making Canada the country it is today, truly a multicultural,
diverse land of oppurtunity!
2) My re-arranged list would look
something like this:
10)Don Cherry
9)Wayne Gretzky
8)Alexander Graham Bell
7)Sir John A. Macdonald
6)Sir Fredrick Banting
5)Lester B. Pearson
4)David Suzuki
3)Terry Fox
2)Tommy Douglas
1)Pierre Elliott Trudeau
I personally think that on this list, Pierre Elliott Trudeau truly deserves to be placed in the number one spot. Mr. Trudeau has made various contributions to our Canadian heritage. Firstly, he emplemented the Official Languages Act. This allowed the english language and french language to play an even part in our country. It made citizens feel comfortable and gave them a sense of belonging when they immigrated to Canada. Secondly, It was Trudeau's idea to include the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom in the constistution. He wanted to make sure that all canadian citizens rights were prtected by the government. Mr. Trudeau was a strong believer of what a citizen is entittled to. Everyone should be respected and taken care of. Last but not least, Pierre Elliott Trudeau was the reason why Canada is not seperated from the province of Quebec, instead, we are still united. These are just a few of the major impacts Mr.Trudeau has had on this country. The list consists of amazing people that have made amazing diffrences, however, i believe Pierre Elliott Trudeau should be recognized by being placed in the top spot.
Part B:
Lieutenant General Romeo Dallaire
THE STORY:
In April of 1994, tragedy struck in the lives of citizens of Rwanda. A genocide occured that killed approx. 800 000 people simply because they were "Hutus" found in the boundaries oF Rwanda. In which this disgustinng act has occured, the whole world has turned their backs on the desperate people and their hopes for survival. No one seemed to care, at least cared enough to help. One man who did step in to help, was Lieutenant General Romeo Dallaire. General Dallair served as a Force commander for United Nations division of Canada. He did everything in his power to protect the Hutus of Rwanda. Most United Nation groups from various countries, stepped aside when the genocide grew and frightened their troops, however,General Dallaire did not. He did his best to provide people with food & medical supplies, and officers to protect the families. Hutus found within Rwanda borders were to be killed by the Tutsis (the other group of people living in Rwanda), but General Dallaire could not bare that.He called for enforcements from many sources to supply needed materials, but nobody seemed to care enough to make that diffrence. At the end of this, General Dallaire succeeded by saving as many families possible, with no help from the rest of the world.
REASONS FOR CHOOSING GENERAL DALLAIRE:
This canadian citizen has demonstrated courage, determination and strength. He has made a difference in the lives of others (especially in Rwanda) and has represented Canada in a positive way. He put others before himself, no matter what the circumstances were. Even though he stood alone, he managed to follow through and "saved the the day". Canadian citizens are to keep the peace and look out for the enviroment. They are to look out for eachother and step up when expected to fufill a certain duty. This man has done that and so much more. That is why Lieutenent General Dallaire is the top canadian citizen in my eyes.
Part A:
1) After reading the “Greatest Canadian” list I have come to a decision that I definitely oppose/do not agree with Canada’s decision. I am strongly confident about this for one main reason which is that not all Canadians vote therefore; this survey was basically just based on who was more known and not necessarily for who actually made the greatest contributions to Canada. I feel that some Canadians who were voted as the greatest Canadians should not have even been on the list to begin with. A great Canadian should be recognized for what their accomplishments were and how it affected Canada as a nation in the past and present rather than just how popular they were based on the Canadian citizens. Also, in my opinion a great Canadian should value the well-being of the citizens and make a difference so that they will be recognized. For example, when you compare a great citizen like Tommy Douglas to Wayne Gretzky, both of their reasons why they were voted to be one of the greatest Canadians were totally different. While Tommy Douglas improved healthcare, improved education, and actually helped shape the economy and society of Canada in a positive way, Wayne Gretzky played professional hockey and was considered the greatest hockey player of all time. It is actually very surprising how people in our nation could actually vote for a professional hockey player as one of the greatest Canadians while there were so many other individuals out there who could have had that position instead. Many individuals could argue that Wayne Gretzky was a matter of fact an important contribution to Canadian history because he changed the way Canadians portrayed hockey and now it’s the nation’s sport. This controversy can basically go back and forth but no matter what the order is, I believe it is just based on the individual’s opinion and how well the person is known. However, it goes with no doubt to say that many of these great Canadian citizens on the top 10 list have made many contributions to not only Canada as a whole but have touched the hearts of many Canadian citizens.
2)2) If I was given a choice to re-order the list, I would order it in this specific order:
10) Don Cherry
9) Wayne Gretzky
8) Pierre Elliot Trudeau
7) Sir John A. Macdonald
6) Alexander Graham bell
5) Lester B. Pearson
4) David Suzuki
3) Terry Fox
2) Tommy Douglas
1) Sir Frederick Banting
I re-ordered this list according to who I felt really affected Canada in a positive and powerful way and who I believed was the greatest Canadian based on their accomplishments. Don cherry and Wayne Gretzky are in 10th and 9th because I felt they did not contribute to Canada dealing with the economy but however, more of entertainment and sports. Sir Pierre Elliot Trudeau and Sir John A. Macdonald are in 8th and 7th due to the fact that they were Canada’s Prime Ministers and they shaped the early economy and made it what it is today. In 5th, 4th and 3rd are Alexander Graham Bell, Lester B. Pearson, and David Suzuki. They were chosen for these positions for Alexander’s accomplishment of creating the first telephone, Lester B. for being part of the minority government and introducing universal healthcare, the United Nations, along with many other plans for the Canadian economy, and finally David Suzuki for being so conscientious about the environment. Terry fox comes in 3rd on my list for being such a brave man with cancer, raised money for a cancer fund by running across Canada, and warming all the hearts of all the citizens around him. In 2nd is Tommy Douglas for contributing so much to Canada’s society with improving healthcare, education, social welfare etc. which pretty much means he was one of the most well-known individual when it came to the economy and society of Canada. Finally, in 1st is Sir Fredrick Banting. I truly believed he should have been honored with being first on the list because he was big on developing healthcare and he was the first individual who created insulin for people who have diabetes. In today’s day, many individuals have diabetes and it is a big part of our world. Without insulin, many people would have eventually died having diabetes. Not only did he create insulin, however he served in World War 1 as part of the Canadian Army Medical Corps. He was then wounded there, and was given the award of the military cross. He is now seen as a hero amongst many individual citizens of canada for saving so many lives. Thus, these are just some of the many reasons why Sir Fredrick Banting should be recognized as the greatest Canadian of all time.
Part B
In my opinion, an individual who has demonstrated what citizenship is all about is Lieutenant General Romeo Dallaire. Romeo Dallaire was born in Holland where his father was in the Canadian services. At age 14, he decided to join the Canadian army cadets and soon after entered in the Canadian military. In 1993, he was then chosen to lead the United Nations forces in Rwanda, Africa. There were big disputes between the Hutu and Tutsi tribes and that was when it all began. Romeo Dallaire tried to prevent the genocide in which he knew was occurring however, the United Nations turned down his pleading of more troops. He requested help from not only the UN but from many other nations as well although they all turned him down. However, they are now recognized as great decisions that actually would have stopped the genocide from occurring and actually would have saved thousands of lives. Lieutenant General Romeo Dallaire is seen as a hero to the hearts of many Canadian citizens for his great effort of saving 20, 000 Rwandans from death. Not only did the United Nations not allow for armed weapons and more troops into Rwanda, but the United Nations decreased the troops from 5000 to 300. In my opinion I was very appalled at the fact that the United Nations basically turned down all the possible ways of stopping the genocide from occurring and for that let so many innocent people, including children, be slaughter and killed. He made a huge difference because alone he saved 20, 000 lives without the help of the United Nations. This basically shows all Canadian citizens that anyone can make a difference which is also a reason why he is a great role model in the public eye of citizens. It takes just one persons initiative to make a difference in the world.
In my opinion, Lieutenant General Romeo Dallaire with no doubt embodies the three aspects of citizenship which are informed, purposeful and active. He was the only one who knew that a genocide was going to occur and did everything in his power to stop it with what he could do. I believe he was very purposeful because with all the techniques and plans he came up with along with his troops, Dallaire was able to save 20, 000 lives. Finally, he was active because he joined the Canadian cadet’s army when he was only 14 years of age and approximately 4 years after joined the Canadian army. After his retirement, Romeo Dallaire is still active and is now a noted speaker and special consultant. To conclude, for all Lieutenant General Romeo Dallaire’s efforts and accomplishments, he was presented with the Aegis award in 2002. He truly was a man of honor and should be recognized as one of the greatest Canadian citizens and heroes.

1. Do you agree with the choices that Canada made? To properly answer this question, you may have to “Google” the names to find out a bit more about some of these people. Thoroughly explain whether or not you agree with the choices Canadians made. Respond in a paragraph (min. 6-8 sentences).
Yes I do agree with the choices that Canada has made because these people have made a strong impact on our lives, and are inspirational Canadian citizens. Although I do have mixed feelings about Wayne Gretzky being on the top 10 list, I do believe he should be on the list, but I think their are others who deserve to be there instead of a hockey player, yes he was great, but it doesn't really affect us, but others like David Suzuki have made a stronger affect on us, perhaps Avril Lavigne should also been on the top 10 list, yes she is a great Canadian but her singing has nothing to do with us.
2. If you had to re-order the list, how would you do it? Explain why your #1 choice should have been the Greatest Canadian.
If I were to re-order the list it would be :
10.Wayne Gretzky
9.Tommy Douglas
8.Don Cherry
7.Alexander Graham Bell
6.Lester B. Pearson
5.Pierre Elliot Trudeau
4.David Suzuki
3.Terry Fox
2.Sir Frederick Trudeau
1. Sir John A. Macdonald
I would re-order the list in this order because I feel that, these are the people that have really made an impact on my life. Sir John A. Macdonald would be number one of the list, because he was the first prime minister of Canada and as that he should have the greatest impact on our lives, because he is bascially a founding father of Canada.
Part B ;
-choose an individual or a group that you feel demonstrates what citizenship is all about;
-research and compare significant contributions made by the individual or group to their communities and assess the impact of these individuals’ or groups’ contributions;
-what did this individual or group do to make a difference and why does it matter?
-describe how the individual or group embodies the three aspects of citizenship;
-in your opinion, why is this individual or group a great role model for citizenship? (respond in a paragraph 6-8 sentences)
There are many Canadian iindividuals who have made a difference in our lives. One that stands out the most to me is Terry Fox. Terry Fox began the Marathon of Hope to raise money for cancer, he began by dipping his leg in the Atlantic ocean and to finish by dipping his leg into the Pacific ocean , he also has two water bottles filled with water from the Atlantic ocean, he would keep once as a souvenir and the other he would pour into the Pacific ocean. To me that is really inspirational how a young man, with an artifical leg had such a big heart and was so determined to help others with cancer, if he hadn't done what he did, many people wouldn't care about those in need, but because someone who was suffering from cancer actually tried doing something about it, it makes a huge impact on our lives. Therefore this is why I think Terry Fox is such a great Canadian citizen.
A)In a way i do agree with what the majority of the Canadian population says. Although i would say that i would rearrange some of the people on the list, they are all important. They all have done things very important for Canada, and for the rest of the world. Although David Suzuki has contributed greatly to the environment, he hasn't made the greatest difference, and people like Ferry Fox have contributed more. In other words, i would not put David Suzuki at 5, but a bit higher on the list. Overall every one on the list has done something to change life for the better.
B)I would reorder the list this way:
10)Wayne Gretzky
9)Sir John A. Macdonald
8)Alexander Graham Bell
7)David Suzuki
6)Lester B. Pearson
5)Don Cherry
4)Sir Fredrick Banting
3)Pierre Elliott Trudeau
2)Terry Fox
1)Tommy Douglas
I would choose Tommy Douglas as the greatest Canadian because he introduced health care which has been a great help to many poor families because they might not be able mto pay their hospital bill.
Part B:
If I had to choose a Canadian who demonstrated good citizenship I would choose Terry Fox. He not only demonstrated good citizenship, and he also helped to save many lives by running for the Canadian Cancer Association. To date, the annual Terry Fox run held around the world has raised over $400 million. The difference that Terry Fox made was that he has raised so much money for cancer, and cancer research.
He was a great citizen because he has shown great strength, and courage. HE demonstrated this by almost running 1 full marathon eachday for 143 days. He is a good citizen because he has obeyed laws, and he gave his life to make the lives of Canadians better. He gave his life because he knew that he was terminal, so he wanted to die doing something to help people. He has shown many Canadians how bad Cancer is. He also showed that if your heart burns with passion, even though cancer weakens you, you could do anything. Terry Fox is one of the strongest, passionate Canadians ever, and he showed the world that it isn't a shame to be Canadian.
by nirary I picked david suzki because he has found alot of ways for us canadians to save money on our energy with different lightbulbs to use. He keeps us up to date on climate changes and global warming. He cares about our envirnmentand helps us find ways to make it a better place for us to live.
The Greatest Canadian
1.Yes i do agree with chioces that Canada has made because all of these people have made a difference in Cananda today. I do think that they all deserve to be on that list because they all have proven something that has shown them that they are concidered a great Canadian. All of these peopel have done something in there past that have made Canadians today remmeber them that's why they are on the list. All of htese people fought for what they thought was right and that is agreat accomplishment, without these people on the list Cananda would not be what it is today, all of these people are honorable.
2.If i would have to re-list the list i would have put:
10.Don Cherry
9.Sir Frederick Banting
8.Sir John A. Macdonald
7.Lester B Pearson
6.David Suzuki
5.Wayne Gretzy
4.Peirre Elliot Trudeau
3.Alexander Graham Bell
2.Tommy Douglas
1.Terry Fox
The reason why my number one chioce is Terry Fox is because he had run threw more the half of Canada with one leg, he is truley and inspiration to all Canadian now in days nobody has ever forgottened who he is, he is truley a great Canadian.

Part A:
1.Yes, I do agree with the choice that Canada has made, as a top ten list. I think that each of these people deserves a spot on the list. Also, each person did an important job to make Canada what it is today. For example, Tommy Douglas was an amazing man who did many things for our country. Some of the things he did were the idea of paved roads, and sewage systems. Without his contributions what would we be driving on, and where would our waste water go? This is why I agreed with the choice as the number one Canadian. However, I disagree with the number ten choice as Wayne Gretzky. He is an amazing man, with great talents, and he shows such dedicated, but I don’t think that he has truly contributed to Canada. Many people look up to Gretzky because he is a great hockey player, and good role model, but he didn’t do anything truly important in Canadian history. Overall, I think that Canada has done a good job at picking the Top Ten Greatest Canadian List. Each of the people on the list has inspired many other Canadians to do what they believe in, and they all have done their part to make Canada what it is today.
2. My number one choice as a Canadian citizen would definitely be Tommy Douglas. I choose this man because, I believe that he has done amazing things for Canada like pass over 100 bills, and the idea of paved roads and sewage systems was from him. Also, he has made an extremely large impact on the health care system, and without this mans idea we probably would not have health care in our country. Douglas has done so much for Canada like social welfare, and he reduced provincial debt by $20 million. I believe Tommy Douglas deserves his spot as the number one Canadian because he did an amazing job.
10. Wayne Gretzky
9. Don Cherry
8. Alexander Graham Bell
7. Sir John A. Macdonald
6. David Suzuki
5. Pierre Elliot Trudeau
4. Lester B. Pearson
3. Terry Fox
2. Sir Frederick Banting
1. Tommy Douglas
Part B:
An individual I feel that demonstrates what citizenship is all about is Nellie McClung. She is remembered for the famous “Person’s Case” which stated that women were declared people. Nellie was born in 1873 in Ontario. She began to teach about women and children’s rights at the age of sixteen, she did social work, and she later joined the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). This group was responsible for social and health that alcohol caused. The WCTU group fought cases like the right for women to vote in the country. Later in 1896 McClung joined Winnipeg Political Equality League. This league helped women wage earners, and the Canadian Women's Press Club. Nellie showed people what type of work women did like in the sweatshops. In the year of 1914 McClung and other women wanted to fight against what Premier Roblin strongly believed in, that women had no right to vote. Nellie was known for her fight against free medical and dental care for children, laws for divorce, and many other rights for women and kids. Sadly, she died but Nellie will never be forgotten for what she has done for women and children in Canada.
I believe this individual shows what citizenship is all about because; she fought for the right that woman all over Canada can vote. She showed all three aspects of citizenship, and she is a wonderful role model for women today. She is such a good role model since, every woman wants to be powerful, and this is what Nellie had embodied. She showed that women are just the same as men, and fight for what you believe in. Most importantly, this individual made a difference in Canada and it matters because, if she did not who knows if women today would be able to vote.

1. Yes I believe that Canada has made the right choices starting from 10 going to 1 because all the people on the great Canadian list are very good people. Othe Canadian citizens should look up to all the people on the list because they are great role modles. Most of the canadians on the list have changed our lives or even changed history. Many and almost all the people on the list will fight for what they believe in and wont take no for an answer. Even the tenth person on this list has changed history in one way or another. The person on the list that is tenth is Wayne Gretzky, he is known as 'the great one' because of his talent in the national hockey league. He has accomplished much, when he announced his retiarement the NHL offically made is number (99) offically retired and was the only one to wear his number.
2. If you had to re-order the list, how would you do it? Explain why your #1 choice should have been the Greatest Canadian.

3. Wayne Gretzky
2. Don Cherry
1. Terry Fox
My number one choice should have been the number one Canadian because Terry Fox started the Marathon of Hope which was a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research. He took 18 months to prepair for his journey. Terry started his run in St. Johns Newfoundland, but terry had to stop running just outside of Thunder Bay because cancer had pread to his lungs.
Part B
Forget the list for a minute…
There are many Canadians and individuals all over the world who have demonstrated the importance of being a good citizen. You are to do the following:
-choose an individual or a group that you feel demonstrates what citizenship is all about;
-research and compare significant contributions made by the individual or group to their communities and assess the impact of these individuals’ or groups’ contributions;
-what did this individual or group do to make a difference and why does it matter?
-describe how the individual or group embodies the three aspects of citizenship;
-in your opinion, why is this individual or group a great role model for citizenship? (respond in a paragraph 6-8 sentences)
I chose Terry Fox, Terry Fox is an insperation to us all because of his big trip around Canada. He had to train for 18 months and ran over 3, 107 miles to prepair for his journey around Canada. Terry was only 18 years old when he found out that he was diagnosed with bone cancer. He had his right leg amputated six inches above his knee.
Informed: Terry fox is informed because he knew that he had cancer, but he still decided to run so that he can raise money fo cancer research.
Active: Terry is an active person because of his strength to put together a marathon for cancer research when no one was behind him and ran for himself and all the other people around the world that has cancer.
Purposeful: Terry's journy was purposeful because when he was still in he hospital he saw all the suffering that other people and children were going through, then decider to run to raise money for cancer research. He called his journey The Marathon of Hope.

CIVICS ASSIGNMENT:
CITIZENS WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE
PART A:
1) In society today, more so our country of Canada; I have and would like to express many thoughts and feeling towards the many differences that Canadians have made. Differences that have changed our country and most importantly, the people in it. Differences made in our country of Canada come not just in one category, but in many others. Of all the Canadians that have made a difference there are a few I would like to point out and discuss further. For starters, I would like to point out Terry Fox, who I feel has made a lasting difference in our country. He was a man of courage, and lefts us amazed at his accomplishments and ability to persevered, never give up as hard as times had gotten. Terry Fox had become diagnosed with a bone disease at only the age of eighteen. Throughout the many times he has spent in the hospital with many other cancer patients, he had realized how much pain it as causing for other, how much it affected others lives, and most importantly how many people had been diagnosed with some sort of cancer, especially children. Once he realized this he decided to run across Canada to raise awareness, as well as money for cancer research. As hard as times got he kept going, raising over four million dollars. Although he had later passed away after being forced to stop running due to a cancer in his lungs, he has still made a huge difference and left an important mark here in Canada! Next, I feel that Alexander Graham Bell has made a difference in our country. Alexander accomplished many great things. He was very interested and passionate about science, as he had become a scientist and inventor. Which goes to show that anything is possible as long as your heart is in the rigt place and you have a lot of passion. Also, that it doesn’t matter how smart or capable you may think you are, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. One major accpmplishment that he has made that has a very huge impact on many lives of most Canadians is that when his mother and sister had been experiencing hearing issues, and being deaf; he went into reasearch for finding a cure which had led one thing to another. Soon after he had invented the TELEPHONE! Something that most Canadians cannot go a day without. Lastly, Sir John A Mcdonald has made a huge difference I feel in our country, being the very first Prime Minister. HE has set a example, and became a role model, someone everyone would like to follow and look up to. Which had given him many responisibilities. However, I feel that he deserved the role of Prime Minister. With his power, he has made many changes in our world. He has moved Canada from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. He has spent many years schooling and getting uducated which payed off for him in his later years when he was placed with the role of Prime Minister. Since then, many others have followed in his footsteps and ways of controlling and making a country better! These are the three main Canadians that I felt stood out and made life changing differences. In general, I feel that Canadians in general have the power to better our country with simple acts of courage just like many of the accomplished Canadians, especially the three that I have listed.
2) If I were to re-order the list of the Greatest Canadians, it wouldn’t bee that much different than the original order that it is in now. I would place the order according to who has made more of a difference and lasting impact in our world today. However, there are some Canadians I feel that have made more of a difference than others and deserved a higher placing on the list. The following is the order of the Greatest Canadians that I feel the list should be in:
Canada’s Greatest Canadians:
1) Terry Fox
2) Alexander Graham Bell
3) Sir John A Macdonald
4) Pierre Elliott Trudeau
5) Tommy Douglas
6) Sir Frederick Banting
7) Don Cherry
8) Lester B. Pearson
9) David Suzuki
10) Wayne Gretsky
My number one choice is Terry Fox, who I feel is the greatest Canadian. Also, I feel that he should have been at the very top of the list, placed as number one for many reasons. I feel that Terry Fox has made a lasting change and difference in the many lives of Canadians. Terry Fox stood up for what he believed in, persevered as hard as things got just to make a difference, to save and help the lives of many cancer suffering patients in out country. He accomplished a lot by the amount of money he has raised and by the amount of miles he has run just to prove how much he cared. He is a very loving and caring Canadian citizen who has made a difference in our world, leaving a mark, and setting a good example to many other Canadians; being the greatest role model that he can be!
PART B:
1) Frederick Grant Banting
I feel that Frederick Grant Banting shows great aspects on being a proud Canadian Citizen for many reasons. First and foremost, Frederick has shown a great deal of acts showing and proving how great a citizen of Canada he is. There are also many things that I learned about him that I have never known before. Frederick was born in 1891 and died in 1941. He lived having an interest in science and medication. He has always sown passion and curiosity towards things like this. Growing up with this interest, he went on to University and studyed medicine which was a great talent of his, not knowing it at the time. He graduated from University in 1916. After serving in the medical army during World War 1, he went on to train to become a certified doctor, performing treatments and helping out with children in Toronto, at the Sick Kids Hospital; a well known, significant hospital. In his later years he sometimes would teach in orthopaedics in another University in London. He suddenly had not felt happy with what he had been learning and wante dto take it to the next level since he had been oh so facinsted by the subject on diabetes. Then, he had decided that he wanted to help out people with this and come up with a cure. He showed great amounts of not only intelligence, but courage, and perseverence; never giving up. He had this idea to test on dogs, and at first noone was sur ehow it would work out, but he knew and wanted to give it a try; which is exactly what he did. He had come up with a certain method to try on dogs, and after several weekd had passed it had soon taken notice that what he had been doing was actually working. Amazed as people were, now it was a known fact that with his method it was possible to keep dogs with diabetes. His experiences has helped and ever since he has made a hige impact and difference in our world today becaue the little things add up and become the most important things. Some features that he shows thorughout his practice and teachings ia courage, interest, facination, enthusiam, and a desire to do what he felt in his heart was right. To experiment to find a cure for something he felt he could make a difference by doing. He showed pride by stayin a citizen to this country and helping this country out with helping people in the medical field, and coming up with a cure to save certain diseased dogs. What he has done to contribute to our countrymatters because many dogs are diseased and struck with this illness and because of Frederick, they now have more of a chance to live, and everyone knows that “A dog is a man’s best friend” and no one would want to loose a dog. So he has helped many lives. Overall, in my opinion I feel that Frederick is a great role model to other fellow Canadian citizens, showing them that you should always follow your passion and not get intimitated or striggele when things get too hard. That you should perservere; never give up, even at the hardest of times, and that anything is possible you just have to experiment around with it and give it some thought. This is why Sir Frederick Banting is a great Canadian citizen and a role model to others!

Read the greatest Canadian list.
1. Do you agree with the choices that Canada made? To properly answer this question, you may have to " Google" the names to find out a bit more about some of these people. Thoroughly explain whether or not you agree with the choices Canadians made. Respond in a paragraph (min. 6-8 sentences)
Greatest Canadian List:
10. Wayne Gretzky
9. Alexander Graham Bell
8. Sir John A. Macdonald
7. Don Cherry
6. Lester B. Pearson
5. David Suzuki
4. Sir Frederick Banting
3. Pierre Elliott
2. Terry Fox
1. Tommy Dougle
I disagree with the choices that Canada has made for the Greatest Canadian list. After reading the list and researching each of the ten Canadians, I realized that there are two that I think should not be on it. One of the two is Wayne gretzky. He should not be a part of this list because he was just a hockey player, and did not do anything historical. The second of the two is Pierre Elliott Trudeau. He should not be on this list because, although he was a writer, a lawyer, and the Prime Minister of Canada, he did not do anything historical for Canada. Other than those two, I think the other Canadians on the list deserve to be on it.
2.If you had to re-order the list, how would you do it? Explain why your #1 choice should have been the Greatest Canadian.
If I was to re-order the list, it would look like the following:
10. Wayne Gretzky
9. Pierre Elliott Trudeau
8. Don Cherry
7. Alexandre Graham Bell
6. Lester B. Pearson
5. Sir Fredrick Banting
4. David Suzuki
3. Sir John A. Macdonald
2. Tommy Douglas
1. Terry Fox
Terry Fox should have been the Greatest Canadian because he showed great determination. He also raised more than 10 million dollars Canadian, for cancer research. Terry Fox taught us, as Canadians, that anyone can achieve their goal.
Part B
Forget the list for a minute..
There are many Canadians and individuals all over the world who have demonstrated the importance of being a good citizen. You are to do the following:
-choose an individual or a group that you feel demonstrates what citizenship is all about;
-research and compare significant contributions made by the individual or group to their communities and assess the impact of these individuals’ or groups’ contributions;
-what did this individual or group do to make a difference and why does it matter?
-describe how the individual or group embodies the three aspects of citizenship;
-in your opinion, why is this individual or group a great role model for citizenship? (respond in a paragraph 6-8 sentences)
Terry Fox is an individual that I feel demonstrates what citizenship is all about. Terry Fox lead a life that was filled with a lot of pain and suffering. He was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma(bone cancer), which was the cause of the removal of his right leg. His goal was to raise money and awareness for a cure for cancer. Throughout his run he raised more than ten million dollars Canadian. As of today the Terry Fox Run occurrs every year, where all citizens come together to help those in need.
The three aspects of citizenship are being informed about the necessities of our country, understanding our relationships with our government and our neighbouring countries, and using their knowledge to directly promote and protect the government. Terry Fox embodies all three of these aspects. He embodies the first aspect of being informed about the necessities of our country by, maintaing the support of all of the citizens of Canada. He made them understand what sickness he had and that with out their support their would be no cure. He also embodies the second aspect of understanding our relationship with our neighbouring countries by not only letting Canadians know about cancer, but every country in the world. Terry embodies the third aspect as well, which is using their knowledge to directly promote the government by using what he knew about his disease to show people that he could still run.
Terry Fox is a great role model for citizenship because, he faught for his goal, to raise money and awarness for cancer. He is also a great role model beacuse he did not let his sickness stop him from living his dream.

Read the Greatest Canadian list.

The Greatest Canadian
• 10. Wayne Gretzky
• 9. Alexander Graham Bell
• 8. Sir John A. Macdonald
• 7. Don Cherry
• 6. Lester B. Pearson
• 5. David Suzuki
• 4. Sir Frederick Banting
• 3. Pierre Elliott Trudeau
• 2. Terry Fox
• 1. Tommy Douglas
I do agree with most of the choices that Canada has made. I believe that all of these Canadians have made great differences in our lives today. For example Terry Fox and Wayne Gretzky are inspirations to all Canadians because we Canadians want to be as important as they are. I believe that this list should be updated because this was created in the past and I feel that citizens have changed their minds or wish for a new person to be on that list, or someone to move up in the rankings. However I disagree with Don Cherry so high up on the list because he was great in his time and is a good sports commentator but he should be around the 8-10th spot because he is a rude person that is known to hate Americans. I agree with Tommy Douglas at the number 1 spot because he created universal health care, and also created social welfare. So Canadians made great choices in picking this list because we use their inventions in our everyday lives today. For example we have health care, insulin, telephones and worldwide fundraisers because of them. So therefore the list has all of the greatest Canadians on it, but I believe that there is room for improvement.
2. If you had to re-order the list, how would you do it? Explain why your #1 choice should have been the Greatest Canadian.
• 10. Don Cherry
• 9. Pierre Elliott Trudeau
• 8. Lester B. Pearson

• 6. Wayne Gretzky
• 5. David Suzuki
• 4. Alexander Graham Bell
• 3. Sir Frederick Banting
• 2. Terry Fox
• 1. Tommy Douglas
Tommy Douglas is my number 1 choice for greatest Canadian of all time because he introduced Canada to social welfare, universal medical care, which is used today. This helps millions of people around the world survive illnesses and diseases that would usually kill a person if medical health care was not introduced to Canada. He also had the idea of social welfare that would help out people that live on the streets. He also reduced provincial debt by $20 million! And that is the huge difference that he has made so I believe he truly is the greatest Canadian ever.

The citizen I chose that I feel has made a difference is Terry Fox. Terry fox became famous for the Marathon of Hope, a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research. Terry ran all of this on one prosthetic leg. He is one of Canada's greatest heroes and is celebrated internationally every September as people participate in the Terry Fox Run. This run is the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research. The Terry Fox Run is to remember Terry but to also raise money for cancer research, which was Terry’s goal in the first place. Terry was a great citizen because he had all three of the aspects of citizenship.
Informed: Terry Fox was a smart young man and he knew that he had cancer, and wanted others not feel his pain so he started the marathon of hope to do this...
Active: Terry Fox showed Canada that anyone can do anything if they put their mind to it. He knew that he could raise money for cancer research if he tried, so he created the marathon of hope in order to raise money for cancer research. He showed that anyone can succeed if they put their mind to it so he is a great role model for everyone.
Purposeful: Terry Fox knew that he did not want others to feel his pain, so he wanted to raise money so no one else would have to lose a life or a leg. He helps people around the world today with this fundraiser and he is a great Canadian hero because of his actions.

1. Yes i do agree with the choices Canada has made with it's top ten "Greatest Canadian" because every one of these Canadians have contributed to our country in numerous ways. However the only person I disagree about in the top ten greatest Canadians is Don Cherry. As much as I love the game of hockey I think that’s all he is, Don Cherry is someone who just criticizes Americans and makes good points about the game of hockey. I think Don Cherry is one of the most popular Canadian's but not one of the greatest Canadians. But someone like Tommy Douglas or Terry Fox, has made a real difference for Canada. If it wasn’t for them, we Canadians wouldn’t be where we are today. Tommy Douglas introduced Canada to social welfare, car insurance, passed over 100 bills, reduced provincial debt by $20 million. Terry Fox is someone who made a huge impact not only in Canada but world wide. Terry Fox ran across Canada with one leg and died near the end of his journey, by the time his health worsened he had raised $24.17 million and the population of Canada was 24.1 million people. he tried to prove having a disease such as cancer cannot stop an individual from accomplishing what they want to achieve.

I picked Terry Fox because I think he made the most impact to people everywhere. Terry Fox is someone who made a huge impact not only in Canada but world wide. Terry Fox ran across Canada with one leg by the time his health worsened he had raised $24.17 million. He tried to prove having a disease such as cancer cannot stop an individual from accomplishing what they want to achieve.

10. Sir Fredrick Banting

Throughout all their work, they’ve made a bigin Canada and around the world, and they are reasons why we Canadians can call ourselves free and independent.
They defend Canada and Canadian power, by monitoring Canada’s regions, protecting , drug interrogation and the environment, disaster relief, and humanitarian assistance.
The Canadian Armed Forces are great role models for Canadian citizenship because they stand up for what they believe in. They are very loyal to their country and do everything they can to prove it, even if it means being shipped to another country. We need to support their because their hard work is for our own well being. They work hard every day, so that Canadian citizens can have a better quality of life. They make others want to be better people because of their constant fight and determination. They show all the aspects of being a true Canadian citizen and inspire people around them to do the same.

In my opinion Canadian Red Cross is a group that helps out in health issues mostly. I chose Red Cross because of how much they contribute to not only Canada but the rest of the world. How does Canadian Red Cross help? Red Cross helps wit basically natural disasters, families, first aid and CPR, swimming and boating safety, violence prevention, homecare services, and donations. This group helps people worldwide and I think they are well appreciated. In my opinion this group is excellent role model for citizenships.

PART A
I believe that Canada has made good selections in respect to the top 10 greatest Canadians of all time. Everyone on the list has had a significant contribution to different aspects of Canadian success and history. Each icon has very unique credentials in a wide range of fields, from sport legends in Don Cherry and Wayne Gretzky to an environmentalist in David Suzuki. Many people in Canada and even around the world do not understand the impact that these people have had on society today. Sir Frederick Banting is a prime example; his medical discovery has withstood the test of time, as it is just as important as it was in the early 1920s. Sir Frederick Bating was the man who gave hope to all diabetics worldwide, he discovered insulin, which converts sugars into energy. Another good choice by Canadians was Tommy Douglas, he introduced universal public healthcare to Canada. It is now a right to all Canadians to free healthcare no matter their financial status. Another great person on the list is David Suzuki, the face of many campaigns on trying to save our planet. He is thinking about the future, we will have a crisis with all these environmental issue such as global warming, and David Suzuki is trying to come up with a solution. Many people may believe that Wayne Gretzky and Don Cherry do not belong on this list, I strongly disagree. Wayne Gretzky may hold countless records in the NHL and simply help teams win hockey games; I think he has done much more. He is the founder of many charities that help needy families enroll their children in sports. He has also been a great spokesman for Canada, while his career flourished in other places like Los Angeles while playing for the Kings, when a lot of people around the world think of Canada, they think of Wayne Gretzky. Another great Canadian hockey hero is Don Cherry; this is a man who simply speaks his mind. He may say a few controversial things every once and a while, but I think he is great for this country. He also is a great contributor to charities, and on his segment “ Hockey Night in Canada”, he never forgets to honour the troops in Iraq. This list sums up the people who have made Canada what it is today.
I would re-arrange the list as follows:
10. Alexander Graham Bell
9. Wayne Gretzky
8. Sir John A. Macdonald
7. Don Cherry
6. Terry Fox
5. Lester B. Pearson
4. Pierre Elliot Trudeau
3. Sir Frederick Banting
2. David Suzuki
1. Tommy Douglas
After re-arranging the list, I came to the conclusion that Canada made the correct selection for greatest Canadian of all time. Tommy Douglas is truly a Canadian legend. He was a key figure in many Canadian developments from healthcare all the way to both provincial and federal politics. In Canada he is very well known as “the father of Medicare”, he introduced universal public healthcare. I think this is so important because everyone deserve the best healthcare available; some people are less fortunate then others and can’t afford some medical procedures. With the universal healthcare, everyone is treated equally regardless of financial status, age, ethnic background, or sex. Mr. Douglas also had a great deal of success in politics; He was the Premier of Saskatchewan for 17 years, he did many great things for that province including; the first car insurance service and reduced provincial debt significantly. Mr. Douglas was also the leader of the federal NDP. Although his party never won an election he was well respected and influenced many decisions made in the history of Canadian politics. These are some of the many reasons I chose Tommy Douglas as the greatest Canadian of all time.
Part B
The individual that I have chosen that demonstrates the importance of being a good Canadian citizen is Romeo Dallaire. He is most known to be the man who is leading the peacekeeping mission in Rwanda. He is doing everything possible to stop this genocide before it gets any worse. Mr. Dallaire was also the Assistant Deputy Minister in the Department of National Defense in 1998. Many people are ignorant to what is happening in Rwanda, Romeo Dallaire is trying to make people aware of what is happening so they could get involved as well. I believe Mr. Dallaire embodies all three aspects of citizenship.
Informed: Romeo Dallaire is a very smart veteran with a lot of experience. He knows a lot about the United Nations and what is takes for his peacekeeping mission in Rwanda to succeed.
Active: Romeo Dallaire is constantly trying to inform people about what is going on, he has made a number of appearances on televisions and radio stations trying to get the message across.
Purposeful: Mr.Dallaire knows exactly what it takes to stop this genocide; he is a man that is trying to stand up for what is right. The United Nations chose him to lead this mission because they know he has what it takes to stop what is happening.

Yes, I do agree with the choices that Canada has made in choosing these 10 people as Canada's greatest citizens.I believe that these people have helped us believe in ourselves and has influenced us to know that anything is possible if we set our minds to it. They fight for what they believe in and nobody can stop them. They've all accomplished good things that can help our world. A lot of people look up to these 10 citizens and they are role models. If it wasn't for them we wouldn't have a lot of associations or clubs to raise money to help people in need. Also, if it wasn't for these people and their impact on us, we wouldn't all be the same way we are now. These top 10 Canadian citizens inspired all of us in Canada that we should all be a right citizen and to do our rights in this country.
2. If you had to re-order the list, how would you do it? Explain why your #1 choice should have been the Greatest Canadian.
If I had a choice to re-order the list I would re-order it as this:
f I had a choice to re-order the list I would re-order it as this:
• 10. Sir Frederick Banting
• 9. Alexander Graham Bell
• 8. Sir John A. Macdonald
• 7. Don Cherry
• 6. Lester B. Pearson
• 5. Tommy Douglas
• 4. Wayne Gretzky
• 3. Pierre Elliott Trudeau
• 2. David Suzuki
• 1. Terry Fox
I would re-order the list and make it in this order because these people have made a bigger impact on my life than other ones have and to me they are the best citizens. I really enjoy what they have done for us and i know most about them.
3.There are many Canadians and individuals all over the world who have demonstrated the importance of being a good citizen. You are to do the following:
-choose an individual or a group that you feel demonstrates what citizenship is all about;
-research and compare significant contributions made by the individual or group to their communities and assess the impact of these individuals’ or groups’ contributions;
-what did this individual or group do to make a difference and why does it matter?
My choice for best canadian citizen is Terry Fox.
I chose Terry Fox because he is a great role model for everyone and even though he had an artificial leg, he chose to run across canada and the Canadian Cancer Society supported/sponsored his run. He did this so that he can help find a cure for cancer because he wants to help people live their lives without disease and suffering. He wanted to make the world a better place. I now know that even sometimes when i'm having difficulties doing something I will try my hardest because I know I can do anything if I want to.We should do everything we can to help.Terry Fox made a difference to my life because he taught me to believe in myself and ill get to where I want to be. He has taught me to be stronger in everything I do and God will guide me. I will fight for what's right and I will make a difference.

Yes, I do agree with the choices that Canada has made. Why? Well, the Canadians that are on this list are great but the order that they are in are not the way that I think it should be. Either way, these Canadians are chosen for what they have accomplish in this world or still are accomplishing, to change the world and make it a better place.
2. If you had to re-order the list, how would you do it? Explain why your #1 choice should have been the Greatest Canadian.
If I was told to re-arrange this list I would put it as:
10. Sir Fredrick Banting
9. Tommy Douglas
8. Lester B Pearson
7. Alexander Graham Bell
6. Pierre Elliott Truedeau
5. Don Cherry
4. Sir John A Macdonald
3. Wayne Gretzky
2. David Suzuki
1. Terry Fox
If I had to re-order the list I would have to chose who I think is the best Canadian by what they done and how it affects our lives today. My number one choice would have to be Terry Fox because of what he has done. By risking his life and running across Canada for the cure to a deadly disease we all call cancer.
Part B
Forget the list for a minute…
There are many Canadians and individuals all over the world who have demonstrated the importance of being a good citizen. You are to do the following:
-choose an individual or a group that you feel demonstrates what citizenship is all about;
-research and compare significant contributions made by the individual or group to their communities and assess the impact of these individuals’ or groups’ contributions;
-what did this individual or group do to make a difference and why does it matter?
-describe how the individual or group embodies the three aspects of citizenship;
-in your opinion, why is this individual or group a great role model for citizenship? (Respond in a paragraph 6-8 sentences)
The individual that I think demonstrates what being Canadian really means is Terry Fox. He has done things that not all Canadians do in there daily lives. Running across Canada and raising money that the same time, equals an amazing task. Something that you believe that something should be change or just finding a cure is well deserved. Well deserved in a sense of respecting the person for what they have done to serve the community, more like the country, that we call Canada.

1. Do you agree with the choices that Canada made? To properly answer this question, you may have to “Google” the names to find out a bit more about some of these people. Thoroughly explain whether or not you agree with the choices Canadians made. Respond in a paragraph
Yes I agree with the choices that Canada because all of these people were great Canadian citizens. For example Tommy Douglas gave Canada its famous free health care system after he was inspired when going through an operation himself. Pierre Elliot Trudeau, one of Canada’s greatest Prime Ministers and the man that made French Canada’s official second language with the Official Languages Act in 1969. These are just some of the great Canadians in this list, but all of them have the same thing in common. They all fight for what they believe in and they made it their goal to make our countries what it is today, the greatest country on earth. These people should be role models for many people instead of celebrities who can sing well or look good on camera. These people have shaped the country of Canada since it was first a country with Sir John A McDonald, who set the bar for the rest of these inspiring Canadians.
2. If you had to re-order the list, how would you do it? Explain why your #1 choice should have been the Greatest Canadian.
If I had to re-order the list I would most likely keep it the same except I might put Sir Frederick Banting first. I would do this because Sir Frederick Banting invented insulin which is a drug used to help people with diabetes. Through his invention he has saved millions of lives, not only in Canada, but across the entire world. However, the current number one Canadian is also suited for this position because he, Tommy Douglas, gave Canada its unique free health care system. He was determined to do this from when he was a child because he needed an operation on his leg, but unfortunately his family was too poor to afford the surgery. Tommy Douglas was most likely going to lose his legs, but then a doctor offered to do the surgery for free if the family agreed to let the doctors students watch the surgery. The surgery saved his leg and ultimately inspired him to provide Canada with a free health care system so even the poor can get surgery.
Part B
I chose Tommy Douglas. Tommy Douglas created free health care for Canadian citizens. This is very important, and one of the things Canada is well known for, because through this system of free health care many people have been able to get surgeries and operations that they usually couldn’t afford. However, health care is not absolutely free. Part of out tax money goes towards our health care system so we can keep it the way it is, and through this method our health care is a lot cheaper than many other countries such as the United States.
Informed: Tommy Douglas was a well informed citizen because he noticed that one of the needs of the community was free health care because many people could not afford operations and died. He also knew how our government system works because he was the leader of the NDP party.
Purposeful: Tommy Douglas was a purposeful citizen because his purpose was to make free health care for everyone in Canada. He also became smarter because he figured out a way to make free health care for everyone without breaking any laws.
Active: Tommy Douglas was an active citizen because he made a change in the way our entire health care system works. He made it so that it was free and that part of our taxes would go towards that.
Tommy Douglas is a great role model, not only for Canadian citizens but for everyone. I think this way because he was dedicated to a good cause from when he was little. This shows a great amount of hard work because to reach his goal he needed to become a leader in government and learn about politics. He also needed to win the peoples votes so he could have a say in the laws that get passed and so he can pass his own law, and eventually he did this when he was the leader of the NDP party. Also, it may not seem like it but, he has saved thousands of lives because of the system he created. Many people we know may have been dead if it wasn’t for our health care system that he created. That is why I think Tommy Doulas is a role model for everyone.

When reviewing the choices that Canada has claimed for the “Top Ten Greatest Canadians,” I do agree with them. Many of these Canadians play a significant part to our Constitution. They all in some way or another enforced change; made a change or even became the change to Canada. For example: Terry Fox, a cancer activist with an attempt of the cross country marathon. As we refer to his story today, we come to an agreement that he has changed the way Cancer is approached in Canada. He used his freedom of speech, his rights, and limited abilities to inspire what we know today as the “Terry Fox Run,” which an event is declared annually by the constitution. However, if we were to look at the political aspect of change to our constitution, I would agree that Lester B. Pearson, a former Prime Minister, which was the founder of the modern peacekeeping. Lester B. Pearson made a start in which included: one on the status of women, and bilingualism. They enforced changes that helped create legal equality for women, and brought official bilingualism into being. After Pearson, French was made an official language, and the Canadian government would provide services in both. These men both made contributions to our constitution, our rights, and how we see Canada today.

1. Terry Fox
My reasoning’s for choosing Terry Fox as my number one Canadian because he was the only normal “citizen” other then a political leader that actually changed Canada in anyway. He set an example for everyone, either a fighter, a supporter or a cancer survivor who wants to support Cancer. He convinced everyone no matter if your strong or weak that we are able to make a difference; and thats what he wants from us.

In my opinion, an individual who started out alone, later ended up with a world wide organization in search for change is Craig Keilburger. He is the founder of the organization called “Free the Children,” which started fight for child labour all across the world. At twelve years old, he came across an article that inspired his story. He was never aware of child labour before this. He strived for change that might cause consequences throughout his life. For example: He suffered public attacks, and was not taking seriously by any older figure. Not everyone agreed with him, it was difficult for him to grasp the attention of an adult, a politician, or any other sort of authority figure. Today, the organization for free the children is a successful world wide contribution that helps prevent any child labour. We all know contribute and support his fight for the respects of younger children in third world countries who don’t have an education or don’t receive any respect. Craig Keilburger, in my opinion should be claimed one of the greatest Canadians. I give him lots of respect because he went out their with a cause and tried to put a stop to it. For a twelve year old kid at the time, he had so much courage to do what he did, and made a success story out of it. He is an inspiration to any young adult which the inspiration to change. He is replica of what Terry Fox tried to fight for, but Cancer killed him on the way.

I somewhat agree with the decisions Canada has made. I feel that some people should be a lot higher on the list than others, but i think Canada got the jist of it. Theese people left incredible impacts on Canadian society, and helped make Canada what it is today. Theese people inspired ad motivated many others to do what they believe is right. For example David Suzuki has inspired many to make our world and environment a cleaner and better place for us to live. David Suzuki has not given up and this inspires others to do the same. Theese individuals have made great contributions to Canadian society, but theres stll room for even greater improvement.
2. If you had to re-order the list, how would you do it? Explain why your #1 choice should have been the Greatest Canadian.
If I had a choice to re-order the list I would re-order it as this:
• 10. Sir Frederick Banting
• 9. Alexander Graham Bell
• 8. Sir John A. Macdonald
• 7. Don Cherry
• 6. Lester B. Pearson
• 5. Tommy Douglas
• 4. Wayne Gretzky

• 8. Tommy Douglas
• 9. Don Cherry
• 10. Wayne Gretzky
I re-ordered the list this way because i felt some of theese people made a bigger contribution than others, and a bigger impact on my life. I think Sir John A. Macdonald should be the number one Canadian. He was our first Prime Minister! Im the U.S they have many things to remember thier president, but in Canada all we have is ahigway names after him and hes on one of our bills. I think Canada could do a better job in keeping our history alive. Macdonald formed our government and made Canada the peace keepig, and loving nation it is today.
Part B
The Canadian i feel has demonstrated outstanding citizenship, leadership and has contributed and improved the Canadian economy is the Unknown Soldier. He died in World War 1 and they found his remains at Vimy Ridge. The Unknown Soldier represents all the Canadians that fought and died for Canada during World War 1.
I chose the Unknown Soldier because i felt i was nessecary to talk about him. he represents all the soldiers who fought for peace and freedom. With out them we could all be living in a German Empire. I feel we should have more to remember theese soldiers beside Rememberance Day. We should honour theese soliders all the time.

1.No I do not agree with the choices that Canadians made about the top 10. Some of them do not deserve to be in the top 10. Don Cherry and Wayne Gretzky are famous hockey players, but they have never done anything that really changed society. Don Cherry is campaigning for the Milton, but that doesn’t really change our society or the way we look at things. I believe that the greatest Canadians are those who have actually changed society or have made an impact on our lives. People like Frederick Banting or Terry Fox have worked hard to change our society for the better. If we didn’t have insulin, what would happen to our society? Diabetics would have a much harder time without insulin, and many may have lost limbs, or maybe even their lives. Why should people like him be compared to people like Wayne Gretzky when there are greater Canadians, such as General Sir Issac Brock, who made sure that upper Canada was not taken by the Americans. In conclusion, I think that the list should be changed because we have many Canadians that deserve to be on the top 10.
2.I would have redone the list as follows:
10. Billy Bishop
9. General Romeo Dallaire
8. Sir John A. Macdonald
7. Alexander Graham Bell
6. Lester B. Pearson
5. Sir Frederick Banting
4. Terry Fox
3. Pierre Elliott Trudeau
2. Tommy Douglas
1. David Suzuki
I think that David Suzuki should have been #1. This is because I think that he has made a significant impact on our society. He is known as an environmental guru for 2 generations of Canadians, and has made environmental issues aware in today’s society. He is trying to make our future a better one for generations to come. If gas emissions and greenhouse gases keep increasing at this rate, we may burn a whole in the atmosphere large enough so that the sun can fully heat the earth. If this happens, not only will our weather patterns be thrown into chaos, it may very well mean the end of human kind. David Suzuki is fighting to make sure that we are making the right decisions in our everyday lives. Using energy efficient light bulbs and carpooling may reduce emissions and energy usage by a good percentage. In conclusion, David Suzuki is a role model for all of us, and we should follow his example.
Part B:
In my opinion, General Romeo Dallaire demonstrates exactly what citizens of Canada should be. He has proven that Canadians can right the wrongs that corrupt leaders and governments have set on their people. Some may think that Dallaire was just an ordinary soldier who tried to help the Tutsis, but he was more than that. He demonstrated courage, love for others and a passion for justice. The Tutsis had always been in power over the Hutus, but when the Hutus were given power, they decided to get even with the Tutsis and started massacring them. Dallaire, who was in charge of the peace keeping forces, pleaded for more troops but he was ignored. If his decisions were accepted and followed, then he may have stopped the genocide altogether. His request for 5000 troops was ignored and he got 2600 instead, which was severely reduced to a mere 500 soldiers. The UN and the other countries had just sat back and watched as hundreds of innocent people were being massacred. Over 800 000 men, women and children were killed in the span of only 100 days. Despite that, Dallaire is considered a hero to many, having saved over 20 000 people. He has a strong will, and no matter how tough it got, he stayed in Rwanda, determined to save as many people as he could.
The three aspects of citizenship are: informed, purposeful, and active. There is no doubt that General Romeo Dallaire has those aspects covered. He was there when it all happened. He knew what would happen if the Hutus were not stopped, and despite his efforts, no one even listened to him. Because he was purposeful, not every person was killed. He managed to save lives, and because of his valiant effort, he will be always remembered as one of the greatest peace keepers in Canadian history. He was active when he signed up for the army and when he led his team of peacekeepers into the country of Rwanda; they all had the same thing in mind: to save lives. Dallaire is now working on the problem of war affected children and visits countries where children are sold as slaves or into sexual slavery.

I personally do not agree with one of the choices that Canada has made of the selection of some of the greatest Canadians. For starters why is Wayne Gretzky up on the list. He was a famous hockey player and that’s pretty much it, but I think there are more important people out there who deserve to be on the list like Lester B. Pearson, he was a Canadian Prime minister and also won a noble prize for peace in 1957 and in my opinion that’s much better then what Wayne Gretzky has done. Other then that I agree with the other choices Canada has made to be on the top ten of the greatest Canadians.

1. David Suzuki
I choose David Suzuki as my number one choice because he cares about the environment and our only planet, he knows what has to be done for example the kyoto protocol. I think he’s the one who will save the planet. So I strongly believe he should be number 1.
Part B

I would have to say David Suzuki demonstrates what citizenship is all about and more. The 3 Aspects of Citizenship:
Active: David Suzuki is very active because he’s always trying to tell everyone what were doing to out planet and how we can make it better. He is active he has his own book, show, website, foundation, advertisement, commercials. So I say his really active.
Informed: He’s very knowledgeable about the environment and know about what promises we have made and that we are not keeping like the Kyoto Protocol. So he know what has to be done.
Purposeful: He can help us all develop in a better way to a better life so that the future can have a place to live on. Or else there might not be a future. Don’t forget we only have one planet.
He recycles, knowledgeable of the environment and about what to do about the environment and knows what not to do. He’s dedicated the rest of his life to change your opinion about the environment of what has to be done of all age groups. For example he wrote a book, has a foundation, television show, advertisements, ideas of products that could change our lives and benefit our planet.

1. Yes I agree with the decisions Canada made on The Greatest Canadian list because all ten of the people have made a difference in our country! If it weren't for the people on the list, Canada would not be what it is today. For example: without Lester B. Pearson, Canada would not have Medicare. Without David Suzuki, we wouldn't have environmental friendly things to help save our earth. If it weren't for Don Cherry's Canadian spirit, many people wouldn't be so proud to be Canadian. I think Canada made a good decision on whom to put on the list. I mean, many of these people have changed our lives, and I thank them.

• 1. Pierre Elliott Trudeau
I chose Pierre Elliott Trudeau as my number one choice because he was a very popular Prime Minister. He confirmed the Charter of Rights and Freedom, and added it to the constitution, so no one could change it! This is a very important part of what makes being Canadian so special!
PART B
In my opinion, Lester B. Pearson was great Canadian citizen, and Prime Minister. Lester B. Pearson was Prime Minister from 1958-1968. He is an important Canadian to me because he accomplished many things in his life that have changed the way we live. First and foremost, he was the Canadian to win the Noble Peace Prize for role setting in the Suez Canal. The accomplishments that changed the way we live are Medicare, Canadian Pension Plan, student loans, and Canada’s present flag. His accomplishments are very important because they have helped many Canadian citizens that cannot afford very much. For example, health care. We are very fortunate that we do not have a health care system like the United States of America, and we can thank Lester B. Pearson. He created this system so we do not have to pay each medical bill; it is paid for by the government of Canada, through our taxes. Student loans are useful to many students who cannot afford to go to school. Student loans are loans given to students by the government of Canada to pay for school. The student must pay the loans back a little at a time. Lester B. Pearson showed that he was informed by creating systems that help our community live a healthy and better life. Pension plan helps the seniors in the community by giving them money for necessities. He showed he was purposeful by having the government put our tax money to good use, helping others. He showed he was active by making his opinion a reality on using tax money for health care and other important necessities in life. In my opinion, Lester B. Pearson is a role model because he showed that if you have a dream in helping others, it can come true and become reality.

1. After reading the “Greatest Canadian” list and doing some research about some of the unfamiliar names, I have concluded by agreeing with the choices Canadians made. I believe that all of the names mentioned on the above list have the right to be listed as “Great” Canadians because of the different ways that they have had an impact on our society. Although some Canadians have made a larger contribution than others, I believe that any little thing that someone does to help, counts as something valuable to our country. Whether it is achieving a free health care system, persevering to help fight cancer, inventing the telephone, or even inspiring our citizens to sustain a healthy and clean environment, a Great Canadian is anyone who has made a contribution in some way. A truly “Great” Canadian citizen should have strong leadership qualities and personal traits such as: determination, self esteem, a positive attitude, are unselfish, and can motivate others, and having all of these key qualities is usually hard to find in most people today. This list of ordinary Canadians has done extraordinary things for Canada itself, and other countries around the world. These people demonstrate how Canadians of all ages and from all walks of life can take action to improve the lives of others in very strong ways. I have explained my view, but at the same time, I believe that there are many other Canadian citizens who have made a big difference in our world that are not listed here.
2. If I had to re-order the list, I would do it as follows:
10. Alexander Graham Bell
9. Sir Frederick Banting
8. Tommy Douglas
7. Lester B. Pearson
6. Pierre Elliott Trudeau
5. Sir John A. Macdonald
4. David Suzuki
3. Rick Hansen
2. Terry Fox
1. Craig Kielburger
I feel that the #1 choice as Top Canadian should have been Craig Kielburger because he has had a very large impact on many children’s lives. Craig founded Free the Children when he was only 13. This was an organization devoted to fighting child slave labour, and encouraging children to speak up about injustice. Craig raised money and awareness about child labour after reading a newspaper article about a former child slave from Pakistan that had been freed. Craig later traveled to Asia on a life-changing trip, to see the conditions himself, and has been building schools, and helping families get access to medical care for the past ten years. Not only does doing what he does make himself feel good inside, he also knows that he has helped many other people around the world live the lives that they deserve. For this reason, I believe that Craig Kielburger is an honourable Canadian citizen.
Although Craig is such a remarkable person, it is very hard to believe that Canadians voted Craig Kielburger as #52 in the Top 100 list! Craig has changed so many children’s lives and he doesn’t even have the right to be in the Top 50? I believe that this just proves how ignorant some Canadians may be, because they have the courage to put Don Cherry (someone who has only contributed a small amount in charitable work for cancer) in the Top 10, but not put a boy like Craig who has had a huge impact on the world even in the Top 50.
PART B
I believe that Rick Hansen is a Canadian who demonstrates what citizenship is all about. Rick Hansen was a natural athlete and loved fishing, but his life was altered after a fatal car collision that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Although everyone thought that this terrible disaster had ruined his life, Rick proved them wrong and showed them how he could turn a disability into an ability!
Rick was left in a wheelchair but he was committed to making a difference in the lives of others. Combining his passions, athletic ability and vision, he left Vancouver to set out on a historical journey around the world, collecting money for spinal cord research. Despite getting sick along the way, and traveling through very harsh weather conditions, Rick persevered, and was successful in traveling his initial 8000 km and raising twenty-six million dollars to go towards spinal cord research.
Ever since Rick became paralyzed in 1973, he has traveled thirty-four thousand kilometers through thirty-four different states and in four countries in his wheelchair. This is a great accomplishment which most people wouldn’t even think of trying - let along doing so while paralyzed!
Rick has also raised and donated four million dollars to develop wheelchair sports and awareness in Canada through the Man in Motion legacy fund. As President and CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation, he has generated more than $200 million for spinal cord injury related programs and initiatives. He currently lives with his family in British Columbia and now travels to some schools and talks to the youth as a motivational speaker.
I believe that Rick Hansen is an individual that embodies the three aspects of citizenship. He is Informed because he was aware that the society needed help with raising money for spinal cord research, and understood that he could be the one person to make a difference. Rick knew that he was disabled, but did not sit around and mope about it. Instead, he took a stand and helped fight for others who were also paralyzed. Mr. Hansen is also a Purposeful citizen because he knew what he had to do to help all of the other paralyzed people in the world. He realized that he could be the one that would fight for all those who had paralyzed and were in a wheelchair by taking the initiative to raise money for research and develop wheelchair sports which would allow paralyzed individuals to feel more comfortable about themselves and properly fit into society. Rick was an Active citizen because after he had decided to fight for the disabled, he persevered through his entire journey and traveled his goal distance and raised a large sum of money for research.
Without individuals like Rick Hansen who was there to make a change for the better, and used his leadership skills of determination, self esteem, unselfishness, and a positive attitude to motivate others, we would not be where we are today. Nobody would take a stand and we would all sulk about how much pain we were in, but if we really knew what it was like to persevere on a journey around the world as a paralyzed individual, we would think twice about moping around and doing nothing about it.
In summary, Rick Hansen has shown people that no matter what condition you are in, there is always a way that you can help people. By motivating others and being a leader, he has proven that he is indeed a positive role model that we should all look up to, and has earned my respect as a truly Great Canadian citizen.

1. Do you agree with the choices that Canada made? To properly answer this question, you may have to “Google” the names to find out a bit more about some of these people. Thoroughly explain whether or not you agree with the choices Canadians made. Respond in a paragraph (min. 6-8 sentences).
Yes I agree with the chosen individuals because each of these canadians have put an effort and have had an impact on the way we live. These Canadians demonstrate to the world what a little dedication, and passion can do. I believe they are an inspiration to us all and give us all someone to look up to.
2. If you had to re-order the list, how would you do it? Explain why your #1 choice should have been the Greatest Canadian.
If I had to re-order the list, it would be :
10. Tommy Douglas
9. Alexander Graham Bell
8. Don Cherry
7. Sir Frederick Banting
6. Lester B. Pearson
5. Sir John A. Macdonald
4. Pierre Eliott Trudeau
3. Wayne Gretzky
2. David Suzuki
1. Terry Fox
I chose Terry Fox as #1 because I think he shows us how valuable life is. He was diagnosed with cancer and had his leg amputated, yet he set one of the biggest goals which was to run all accross Canada. He was very committed to his goal and did the best he could. All though he was unable to finish, he set a perfect example on how we should all strive our best to achieve the impossible.
Part B
Forget the list for a minute…
There are many Canadians and individuals all over the world who have demonstrated the importance of being a good citizen. You are to do the following:
1.-choose an individual or a group that you feel demonstrates what citizenship is all about;
-research and compare significant contributions made by the individual or group to their communities and assess the impact of these individuals’ or groups’ contributions;
-what did this individual or group do to make a difference and why does it matter?
-describe how the individual or group embodies the three aspects of citizenship;
-in your opinion, why is this individual or group a great role model for citizenship? (respond in a paragraph 6-8 sentences)
Wayne Gretzky
Many know Wayne Gretzky as the guy who gets all the goes, and sets all the records for the wonderful canadian sport of hockey. After retiring from a marvelous 20-year career in proffessional hockey, Gretzky now coaches the Pheonix Coyotes and founded the Wayne Gretzky Foundation. The Wayne Gretzky Foundation is a charity in which money is raised to send children to hockey camps and put them in leagues so that they can learn the sport, and enjoy their childhood. Gretzky can be known as a role model to all kinds of people because of his success and of his charity work. Gretzky can be looked at as a great player, a great coach, a great man, and most importantly a great canadian.

PART A:
1. No, I do not agree with everyone on the "Top Ten Canadians" list. In my opinion, voting for a certain person to be put on a top ten list to imply that they're the "greatest Canadian," is not only useless but, extremely biased. It is pretty evident by looking at some of the contenders put on this list, that people were not voting for the right reasons. When reading this list, it became very apparent that people like Wayne Gretzky & Don Cherry didn't deserve to be on this list whereas people like Tommy Douglas & Terry Fox, worked until the day they died giving to the country. The poor outcome of this list shows me that favortism outweighs many accomplishments made by many other Canadians with much greater contributions & discoveries than others that made this list. Even though some of the people made differences to our country & our society but, it is in small comparision to those who have made much greater impacts to our lives. Yes, some of these people may have made the slightest difference to our lives & created molds for our lifestyles but, if you think about it, there are many more individuals that have done much more or more significant things to help our society or to make it better. Nor did I know that this vote/poll/list even exhisted. If I nor anyone I know, knew that this list was even exhisted, how is this vote called a "nation-wide" vote ? How is this made by "us," when the majority of people haven't even voted. I consider this list, voted by the "minority" of people in the country of Canada. In conclusion, I do not agree with the choices that Canada made with this list.
The Greatest Canadian:
10. Alexandra Graham Bell
9. Sir Frederick Banting
8. Sir John A. Macdonald
7. Craig Kielburger
6. Pierre Elliot Trudeau
5. Lester B. Pearson
4. David Suzuki
3. Gen. Romeo Dallaire
2. Terry Fox
1. Tommy Douglas
I think I would order the list this way because in my opinion, Tommy Douglas made the greatest impact on Canada and it's inhabitants. He devoted most of his life trying to help out the world & the people that needed help. He gave his time & effort giving speeches to help promote help for those in need. He made the social causes above most of his priorities. He's shown exemplar Canadian qualities & truely deserves to be on this list of "top ten Canadians." As you can see, Wayne Gretzky does not deserve to be on the list & he should've been replaced with Gen. Romeo Dallaire. Gen. Romeo Dallaire showed exceptional skill & heart, helping thousands of Rowandans throughout the genecide. I would have also taken off Don Cherry & replaced him with Craig Kielburger because Craig has inspired many & has given education to those in much dire need of education & appreciative kids around the world. He has given many people, the opportunity to be heard & that's why he should be on the top ten Canadians list.
Part B
David Suzuki.
I think that David Suzuki is the one Canadian that shows what citizenship was all about. He embodies the three aspects of citizensip - imformed, active, &purposeful - by just doing his job & doing it well. He keeps up with all the important environmental issues & spreading the word about them. He broadcasts & has won numerous awards for showing his knowledge with the world. All of his contributions to society matter because without them, we would not be as informed as we would be without him. This is because he makes complex situations much more simple & easy to understand, which captivates peoples attentions & makes us capable of becoming active. This indivitual is a great role model for citizenship because he is one of the few that help us understand what's going on around us, not just to show off his awards & accomplishments, but to help us continue to try & keep our environment healthy so that when we grow old, others can see and enjoy it too.

1.I agree and disagree with this list because there are some people who did something to chance the history of Canada and there are some who did not make a difference. Tommy Douglas is a good example because Douglas made a huge difference in Canada’s history because he led the first socialist government in North America and introduced universal public health care to Canada. I do not agree with some people on this list for example Don Cherry because he dint really do anything to be the greatest Canadian he was Canadian hockey commentator for CBC Television .Another good example of a good Canadian is Terry fox he ran across Canada to collect money to find a cure cancer.
• 10. Pierre Elliott Trudeau •
9. Alexander Graham Bell
• 8 Sir John A. Macdonald
• 7. Don Cherry
• 6. Lester B. Pearson
• 5. Wayne Gretzky
• 4. Tommy Douglas
• 3. Sir Frederick Banting
• 2. David Suzuki
• 1. Terry Fox
The person I chose for the number one Canadian is Terry fox because he became famous for the Marathon of Hope, across Canada he ran to raise money for cancer research. Terry fox had one leg to begin with because they amputated his leg because of cancer so he wanted to raise money to stop cancer and find a cure. Terry fox is the best Canadian because he had more determination then anyone on that list. He is also considered one of Canada's greatest heroes of the 20th century. That is why Terry Fox is the best Canadian.
Part B
The person I choose who accentual made Canada, Canada is Jacques Cartier was a French explorer, who claimed what is now Canada for France. He was the first who described and mapped the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the shores of the Saint Lawrence River, which he named "The Country of Canada. That is the best person because without Jacques Cartier there will be no Canada. Cartier was the first to document the name Canada to designate the territory on the shores of the St-Lawrence River. That is why Jacques Cartier is a great example of a Canadian citizen that made a difference
"The Top 10 Greatest Canadians"

• 8. Sir John A. Macdonald

1. Do you agree with the choices that Canada made? To properly answer this question, you may have to “Google” the names to find out a bit more about some of these people. Thoroughly explain whether or not you agree with the choices Canadians made.
An interesting question indeed...
1. After reading the "Top 10 Greatest Canadians" list, I had come to the conclusion that this list makes my “Top 10 Most Ridiculously Stupid Things I Have Ever Read in My Life" list. Wayne Gretzky as the 10th most important Canadian in Canadian history? I'd like to know what Canadians were smoking that could make them so delusional! As many of you readers know, Wayne Gretzky played hockey; period. Yes, the man was a phenomenal hockey player; however, he should definitely be stripped of the honour of the "Top 10 Greatest Canadians". Also, Don Cherry is ranked higher than Canada’s first Prime Minister, and the man who created the first telephone?! That is the most ridiculously angering piece of information I have most likely ever received in my entire life! In my opinion, a Canadian hero deserves recognition based on the amount they have contributed, not only to their country, but to the citizens as well. A true Canadian Hero’s contributions must have impacted Canada and its citizens in present and future years; they should not just the most popular individual. Also, the information gathered for the "Greatest Canadians" is outdated by almost 5 years! It is not an accurate representation of the population’s preference. Although there were a few Canadians that I disagree being on the "Greatest Canadians" list, I feel it’s safe to say that all the other Canadians are not only incredible Canadian Achievers, but also International Icons. After researching the contributions of our “Top 10 Canadian” in Canadian history, it occurred to me that heroes like Tommy Douglas deserve the honour and respect of being voted as “Canada’s Greatest”, while others like Don Cherry hasn’t done anything except bash Canada’s reputation as a valued and country. Not only have Tommy Douglas’ contributions impacted Canada, but internationally as well, including law and order, medical care, and economically advanced this nation wide. Meanwhile, Don Cherry has continuously been a controversial figure in Canadian history, doing absolutely nothing significant to evolve Canada or the world. In conclusion, I greatly disagree with the “Top 10 Canadians” for two reasons. Firstly, it doesn’t accurately take all the great Canadians contributions and scrutinize who really made a significant difference in Canada, and the world for the matter. Secondly, I think the top 10 Canadians shouldn’t be voted upon by the nation, instead nominated by experts of Canadian history. The reason is that a lot of Canadians aren’t aware enough of who accomplished what in this country. Giving them the responsibility of determining our country’s Greatest Canadians is a roll they are not ready to take upon, because of their lack of knowledge.
2. If you had to re-order the list, how would you do it? Explain why your #1 choice should have been the Greatest Canadian.
Another very interesting question…
I would Re-order the list as follows…
10. Don Cherry
9. Wayne Gretzky
8. Sir John A. Macdonald
7. David Suzuki
6. Alexander Graham Bell
5. Pierre Elliot Trudeau
4. Lester B. Pearson
3. Sir Frederick Banting
2. Terry Fox
1. Tommy Douglas
If I were to rearrange the list, I would make significant changes to the order. I ordered the list based on the level greatness the contribution the user made, followed by how much it impacted Canada, the citizens, the world, whether the world is still mentally conscious of the users actions in present time, and whether the world will remain conscious of their achievements in the future. In last place are Don Cherry and Wayne Gretzky. With all due respect to these 2 men, I feel obligated to say that they seriously do not deserve the honour of being up there, and I am honestly pissed off to the extreme right now just reading their names on that list. These men only made changes to the entertainment and media of Canada in negative and positive ways. Macdonald should be eight on the list for developing Canada as a Dominion. Then, Suzuki should be seventh since he advanced science and the environment, while Bell should be sixth since he advances communication by inventing the telephone. In fifth should be Trudeau, since he established rights and freedoms. In fourth should be Lester B. Pearson because he was the minority government that introduced universal health care, the United Nations, and other plans for Canadian economy. Third place goes to Sir Frederick Banting for his amazing discovery of insulin, bringing new hope to diabetics all over the world. In second place is the great Terry Fox for raising $24.17 million in his ‘Marathon of Hope’. Terry Fox runs are also held every year, in over 60 countries. Terry inspired and touched the hearts of millions around the world bringing hope to the lives of many. I feel it’s important that the world needs to be mentally strong, in order to survive. Without hope, comes failure, with failure comes defeat, and with defeat comes nothing. Terry did phenomenally in lifting the spirits of people all over the world, and brought hope to many. Over $360 million have been raised for cancer research because of Terry Fox. Finally, the greatest of the great, the #1 ‘Greatest Canadian’; Tommy Douglas! I believe that Tommy Douglas deserves to be the ‘Greatest Canadian’ because not only were his contributions international, but they also involved various things, emphasising health. Without health as our top priority, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the additional aspects of life such as entertainment, politics, money, or rights and freedoms. Not only did Tommy Douglas contribute greatly to Canada, but he did in an amazing way as well. After his leg was amputated, he became Canada’s founding father of medical care. Then, after witnessing the bloody end of the Winnipeg General Strike, he was able to pass over 100 bills, and established paved roads and sewage systems. Also, he was able to reduce provincial debt by $20 million. In conclusion, Tommy Douglas deserves the honour of being Canada’s ‘Greatest Canadian’. He managed to cover health, politics, social welfare, and economics, while maintaining their importance years later. What astonishes me is that there are people ranked in the same league as this man for doing what? Being good at hockey and bashing Canada’s reputation as a valued country; doesn’t make even a bit sense if you ask me.
Part B
Forget the list for a minute…
There are many Canadians and individuals all over the world who have demonstrated the importance of being a good citizen.
Throughout Canadian history, there have been many difficult times for many different people, and how these situations are dealt with is what defines us as individuals. However, in April 1980, Canadians, and the world for that matter, witnessed one of the most self-less, determined, and proud individuals whose spirit inspired millions. The person who I am speaking of is Terry Fox. He was born on July 28, 1958 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Terry had a passion for life, and it was this passion which gave millions of others hope. I know a lot of people may have chosen Terry Fox as their Canadian individual, who demonstrates the importance of being a good citizen because ‘he’s easy’. However, I honestly feel from the bottom of my heart that Terry Fox is one of the greatest men, not only in Canada, but the world. Terry Fox was a determined man. “I’m a dreamer. I like challenges. I don’t give up. When I decided to do it, I knew it was going to be all out.” Even with only one leg, Terry had his mind set 100% of the way on putting the ‘Marathon of Hope’ into action; by collecting $1 from every Canadian for cancer research. Despite the fact that Terry had lost his leg to cancer, he remained faithful and refused to let the amputation get the best of him. “I’m not a dreamer, and I’m not saying this will initiate any kind of definitive answer or cure to cancer, but I believe in miracles. I have to.” Although the odds were against him, Terry still remained faithful. His leg would bleed severely at times, and according to Terry, there was constant pain. “I got satisfaction out of doing things that were difficult. It was an incredible feeling. The pain was there, but the pain didn’t matter. But that’s all a lot of people could see; they couldn’t see the good that I was getting out of it myself.” There was pain, there was blood, there was laughter, and there was constant staring, but none of that mattered to Terry; his own body didn’t even matter to him anymore! Terry Fox could only think about the well being of others. He knew that he was not the only person in the world with cancer. “I don’t feel that this is unfair. That’s the thing about cancer. I’m not the only one, It happens all the time to people. I’m not special. This just intensifies what I did. It gives it more meaning. It’ll inspire more people. I just wish people would realize that anything’s possible if you try, dreams are made possible if you try.” His self-less act was more than enough to fill the hearts of millions with hope. In Terry’s journey during the ‘Marathon of Hope’, he was awarded numerous awards in honour of his acts of courage, hope, bravery, and spirit. Although he was being present with metals and checks, Terry’s only intention and motive was dedicated for the people, by the people. “I’m not doing the run to become rich or famous.” Terry was so humble; he didn’t even have second thoughts about the fame or attention he would receive from starting the ‘Marathon of Hope’. Terry Fox endured incredible amounts of pain and suffering. Through him, people all over the world learned that no matter how hard you have to push, how much pain you need to undergo, you should never give up, and pursue your dreams at all costs. Even when Terry was put down for believing he could make a difference, he refused to give up. Determination and persistence are the main aspects of Terry Fox’s success in achieving his dream. Although Terry’s leg was amputated, he overcame the obstacles in his pathway restraining him from accomplishing his goal. When I learned about Terry’s struggles, I was motivated because even when seeing a man lose his leg to cancer, he decided to run across the country, raising money for cancer research. Instead of rolling over and giving up, Terry Fox demonstrated great courage and faith, allowing millions worldwide to gain confidence in their own dreams. Terry Fox has changed the lives of many by showing us that courage and fortitude comes from the heart. You don’t have to be a specific colour, race, have a specific type of body, or be a male or female to make a difference. You just need to believe in yourself. As my concluding statement, I’d like to say that I personally acquired a vast amount of knowledge and wisdom from Terry Fox’s actions and words. He was a man of persistence. He inspired young and old worldwide to have hope, and not give up. Terry Fox died on June 28, 1981, exactly 1 month before his birthday. Terry Fox runs are held every year in over 60 countries, raising money for cancer research. Terry was not only a ‘Great Canadian’, but a wonderful friend, brother, and man to everyone. This is what identifies Terry Fox as a ‘Great Canadian Hero’.

I dont agree with the list i would change don cherry and wayne gretzky they are hockey legends a nd didnt really do anything for the world and i agree with the rest of the list because they all made a difference to people bin the world. I would like to add julian fantino to list and william lyon mackenzie king. HE gave us employment insurance and citezinship.if i had to reorder the list i would put it in this order.1.julian fantino 2.terry fox 3david suzuzki 4 Alexander Graham Bell 5 Pierre Elliott Trudeau 6 Tommy Douglas 7 Lester B.
